Topics presented/discussed: authority for recommending policy related to GER; deadlines for submitting proposals for "intensive" courses to the General Education Committee.
Call to Order:
Jim Morrison, chair of the Academic Senate, called the meeting to order at 4:10 p.m.
Minutes of the Previous Meeting:
Minutes of the 3 November 1999 Senate meeting were approved as distributed.
Senate Executive Committee / Report from the Chair: Jim Morrison reported:
Charter and Bylaws Committee: Committee chair Dale Harrison made the following announcements:
Bylaw 7, Section 1 (c), he reported, "grants authority to the General Education Committee only in matters of procedure for ‘course implementation,’ that is, those policies that govern how courses are submitted for approval to the General Education Committee."
The March 1 minutes state: "Members [of the Charter and Bylaws Committee] also expressed the belief that the Academic Standards Committee will retain significant authority in its recommendations regarding general academic policy, which includes policy recommendations for general education requirements." Copies of minutes are available from Harrison or Bege Bowers.
Harrison reported that members of the Charter and Bylaws Committee "agreed unanimously that the Academic Standards Committee retains authority over initiating policy regarding the goals of General Education, . . . subject to the authority of the full Academic Senate."
Elections and Balloting and Academic Standards Committees: No reports.
Academic Programs Committee: Committee chair Kathylynn Feld announced that the Programs and Curriculum committees have just finished circulating a number of programs and courses. Only a few programs still need to be dealt with. Program/course packets are available in the offices of the deans. The deadline for objections to those in circulation is December 15.
University Curriculum Committee: Patricia Hoyson, chair of the committee, announced that she would append to the Senate minutes a list of approved courses to which there are no objections (see hardcopy Appendix A). Packet #2 is still circulating; send any objections to Hoyson by December 15.
Academic Planning Committee: No report.
General Education Committee: Bill Jenkins, committee chair, noted that the November 1 general education deadline is past. The GEC has been busy and is considering numerous course proposals. Circulation occurs through the offices of the deans; you can see the packets there and file objections via letter, following the procedure outlined in the deans’ offices. If you need forms for "substitute" courses, or other forms, see Jenkins. Get proposals for "intensive" general education courses to the GEC by the end of fall quarter. Since the new general education requirements apply primarily to students entering next fall or later, the deadline for upper-division intensive courses in the major is not quite as imminent.
Integrated Technologies and University Outreach Committees: No reports.
Library Committee: Tom Atwood reported that the committee met a couple of weeks ago. Dora Bailey will chair the committee this year.
Academic Research, Student Academic Affairs, Student Academic Grievance, Honors, and Academic Events Committees: No reports.
Jim Morrison announced that the terms for Senate officers begin in January. (In the elections earlier this fall, Morrison was reelected chair; Charles Singler was reelected vice chair.) Appointments for parliamentarian and secretary need to be made and ratified at the January meeting.
Adjournment: The meeting adjourned at 4:23 p.m.
