Timeline for the HLC Self-Study and Accreditation Process:

Phase 1 (Spring 2006)--Orientation and Planning

Committees develop questions (based on HLC criteria and core components) they will explore in fall 2006--and assign responsibility for addressing those questions. See instructions and templates for Assignment 1 in the right-hand column on the committee page.

Phase 2 (Fall 2006)--Information Gathering and Analyses

Committees (perhaps in conjunction with standing YSU committees or units) explore--and begin to prepare written answers to--the questions they developed in spring 2006. See instructions and templates for Phase 2 in the right-hand column on the committee page.

Phase 3 (January 15-May 31, 2007)--Synthesis and Reporting

Committees prepare final drafts of answers to the questions they developed in spring 2006 and explored in fall 2006. In addition, they identify strengths, weaknesses, and challenges. The reports they submit in May 2007 will become "evidence" in the accreditation resource room.

Phase 4 (June 1-August 15, 2007)--Integration and Dissemination

Steering committee and coordinators review and discuss the reports submitted by the committees in May-June 2007.

Phase 5 (August 16-December 15, 2007)--Dissemination, Feedback, Revision, and Submission

Coordinators draft the self-study document, seek widespread feedback from all constituencies, revise the self-study document, prepare electronic and hard copies, and submit the self-study to the Higher Learning Commission for distribution to visiting-team members.

February 18-20, 2008--Site Visit

A team of evaluators from other institutions, representing the Higher Learning Commission, visits campus, verifies information in the self-study, and meets with individuals and groups, in preparation for issuing the team's report.

Post-Site Visit Team Report

A few weeks after the site-visit, the site-team chair sends a draft team report to YSU's HLC staff liaison for review. YSU subsequently receives a draft and is allowed to correct "errors of fact."

Final Team Report

After YSU receives the final team report, the President of YSU sends a "formal written response" to the Higher Learning Commission and the site-team.

Review and Commission Action

A Commission Readers Panel or Review Committee then reviews the report and related documents; the Commission's Institutional Actions Council or Review Committee takes action; and the Commission's Board of Trustees validates the action.

YSU receives formal notice of the findings. The formal findings, plus issues we ourselves identified during the self-study process, influence YSU's next strategic plan. The Commission may also require YSU to submit progress reports or to undergo a follow-up visit.
