Journals on Teaching in the Disciplines

See also these two UK sources
This listing of subject journals http://www.lgu.ac.uk/deliberations/journals/subj_journal.html
Also many of the recently established UK national subject centres – are now producing disciplinary journals and much more of interest http://www.ltsn.ac.uk/index.asp?id=9
For example as biology was one of the disciplines discussed see Bioscience Education e-journal (BEE-J): http://bio.ltsn.ac.uk/journal/

It’s worth also seeing these in the context of discussions on the level of scholarship in disciplinary journals .For two contrasting but linked perspectives see
Healey and Jenkins A (2003 )Discipline-based educational development in Macdonald, R. and Eggins, H. (eds -2003 ) The Scholarship of Academic Development. Milton Keynes, Open University. pp 47-57
and Weimer, M. (1993) The disciplinary journals of pedagogy, Change, November/December: pp 44 51.

Here is a compiled list of ideas for sci-ed jnls; not all "apply" to
*all* science profs but there are undoubtedly some "likely
candidates" for a current study of univ. science teaching--AND
possible future publication submissions about univ. science teaching.

These types of articles are often "hidden" in lots of other journals specific for college teaching, but not college science teaching. An ERIC search on a topic of interest (and many science profs may not be familiar with the ERIC database since scientists don't routinely use it) will direct them to other relevant journals.

A website which lists many of the the SoTL journals both by
discipline and general interest. http://www.citadel.edu/carnegie/library.htm

http://www.indiana.edu/~libsalc/SOTL/ has a great list of
teaching-related journals organized by discipline.

Some other suggestions are:

Journal of College Science Teaching
Microbiology Education (an ASM press publication)
Cell biology Education (free on-line)
American Biology Teacher
Journal of Chemical Education
Journal of Research in Science Teaching
Journal of Science Teacher Education

The Journal of College Science Teaching is published by the Society of
College Science Teachers (SCST; affiliated with Nat'l Science Teachers
Assoc'n). You can access information about the journal at:
http://www.nsta.org/college

The SCST homepage is located at: http://www.scst.suu.edu/ and has links to a couple of position statements that your faculty member may find interesting: one on introductory college-science level courses, and another on the scholarship of college science teaching.

Cell Biology Education, a newer journal, is free and exclusively online, but is peer-reviewed. Distinguished editorial board, too - your faculty member will most likely recognize some of the names. Doesn't "just" publish cell biology, might also publish biochem SOTL papers.

Also see a longer list of biology education journals at Eastern Kentucky University's Teaching & Learning Center site at:
http://tlc.eku.edu/Resources/Biology.htm
(The page http://tlc.eku.edu/resources.htm has links to education-oriented journals in other disciplines, as well. Great resource!)
Here's a list pulled off a college web site several months ago.

The Journal of College Science Teaching may be the easiest reading as it is not packed full of education terminology--which tends to alienate science faculty--but it's not specific to the area the faculty member requested-- it addresses teaching and learning in both the biosciences and physical sciences. Advances in Physiology Education is also a great journal because it speaks the language of bioscientists.

Advances in Physiology Education: Published by the American
Physiological Society, this journal covers all aspects of physiology
education at academic levels, including research reports, scholarly
essays, and practical aids to teaching. Information about the journal,
including scope notes and instructions for authors, is provided online.
In addition, the full contents of the journal can be accessed online for free through the web page.

Journal of Geoscience Education. Has done amazingly progressive work and have several theme special issues on assessment, coop learning, etc. in earth science/geography/geology. Most of the folks who work with it are NSTA members as well as NAGT.

Journal of Clinical Problem-Based Learning: A peer-reviewed
quarterly web publication dedicated to "furthering the development and
application of problem-based learning and other active learning
strategies in health sciences education." Online access to the full text of the journal is free, but you must register. As part of the
