What is the summer bridge program?

The Summer Bridge Program at Youngstown State University is a one-week program designed to provide traditional-aged multicultural students the opportunity to become more familiar with the academic and social experiences most often encountered by first-year students. Students participate in a full week of activities which include introductory classes, presentations and attendance at several social/cultural events. During this week, students reside in the residence halls on the YSU campus.

Bridge and Beyond, an extension of Summer Bridge, provides participants with a cohort of friends with whom they form a learning community. Within this learning community, students take classes together and meet monthly throughout their entire freshman year. This program is sponsored by the Center for Student Progress Multicultural Student Services.

Why is this program offered by youngstown state university?

First-year students may face many adjustments to college life. The key to successfully completing a chosen course of study depends upon your ability to identify and use educational resources available to you.

The expectations for college are significantly higher than for high school. Learning to manage your time more efficiently, and seeking support services when needed can affect student's future success. The Summer Bridge experience will help student's meet those challenges.
