Travel to Poland!

Forget the Bahamas! Spend spring break (March 9-18, 2007) exploring history and historic preservation in Eastern Europe! Travel to Poland with Youngstown State University History Professors Helene J. Sinnreich and Thomas Leary. Undergraduate YSU students will be enrolled in History 4850: International Area Study for credit in spring 2007; community members are not required to enroll in the course in order to join the study tour.

Highlights of the trip include:

* Tour Auschwitz-Birkenau and then spend the next day doing hands on
work in the Conservation Lab at Auschwitz Concentration Camp

* Dinner in a Medieval Salt Mine

* Tour a Medieval Castle

* See Schindler’s Factory

* Meet with Polish Students

The 8 day trip will take participants through the three largest cities
in Poland – Warsaw, Lodz and Krakow – and for a two day study tour of
Auschwitz concentration camp. Begin the tour in Warsaw’s Old Town,
continue to Lodz and learn the history of 19th century Poland and
industrialization. Lodz, the Manchester of the East, offers an
opportunity to examine the largest remaining example of secession style
architecture, industrial architecture and the palaces of former
industrialists. Learn about the restoration and adaptive reuse of many
of these buildings. Visit the remnants of Jewish life in Lodz and the
Lodz Ghetto including the largest remaining Jewish cemetery in Europe.
From Lodz, travel to Auschwitz for a two day study tour including a day
at the Museum’s conservation lab doing hands on work! Tour the
Wieliczka Salt Mines, one of three UNESCO World Heritage sites visited
on the trip, then stay for dinner served underground in the mine. Next
learn about communism in Poland with a tour Nowa Huta, a communist
created factory town. Explore Krakow including the medieval Wawel
castle, tour the Jewish quarter where Schindler’s list was filmed, and
see the Schindler Factory.
