What can I do in high school?
Even though you have not yet reached college there are many things you can do while you are still in high school to better prepare yourself for the transition to college such as…
- Take as many high school math courses or build up your math skills through other arenas (this will be helpful when you take the math portion of the ACT or your YSU Math Placement exam—it may save you time and money once you get to college)
- Best Grades—do your best to get your GPA to its highest. It’s never to late to start improving! (although there are lots of financial aid options for everyone—the better your grades the more doors may open for scholarships and grants)
- Study for the ACT—yes the ACT does matter. This will allow you to take more courses if you score above a 17 ACT composite.
- AP exams—if your school offers the classes then why not get a taste of college level classes before you leave high school! If you want to take the AP exam make sure double-check to see which AP exams YSU accepts and what the minimum score is that you need.

What do I need to do before I meet with an advisor the first time?
- Make sure you take your placement exams if needed (sign up through the EARLY/SOAR program) before you come to orientation.
- Have an open mind and be ready to experience new classes and new topics.
When do I meet with an advisor?
You will meet with an advisor at EARLY/SOAR (our freshman orientation program).
What types of classes will I take when I first get to college?
Incoming freshman usually focus on our basic skill classes based on the placement exam scores (Reading & Study Skills, Math, English), a course from their major, and a general education course their first semester at YSU. However it’s something that we can discuss and tailor to your particular needs.
