Graduate Assistantships

GENERAL INFORMATION

YSU graduate assistant are expected to devote 20 hours per week for 16 weeks per semester to assistantship duties. Specific duties of graduate assistants will vary according to the department’s need. These graduate assistants receive fall, spring, and summer semester tuition remission. Assistantships require that the student is enrolled full-time in a YSU graduate program. Most assistantships offer a $7500 stipend, but this varies with different departments.

Student Affairs Graduate Assistantships Available through YSU

Campus Recreation and Intramural Sports
To assist in the implementation of a pilot wellness program incorporating components of physical fitness and testing, mental health, nutrition, spirituality and recreation through the coordination and collaboration of various departments on campus as well as community based agencies and organizations.

Career Services
The graduate intern will become familiar with all facets of the operation of a career services office, and will be involved in the delivery of direct service to the various constituencies (students, alumni, employers, university faculty and staff) served by the office. The graduate intern will have the opportunity to facilitate group presentations, conduct job search skill development and similar workshops, learn software used in the Career area, as well as plan and undertake projects designed to increase student awareness of and involvement in office programs and activities.

Center for Student Progress
Assists with the overall operation of the Center for Student Progress (CSP) services to develop an overview of the role of learning assistance in higher education. This GA may attend training sessions for Supplemental Instruction Services, Student Tutorial Services, Individual Intervention Services, Disability Services, and First Year Student Services.

Counseling Department at YSU
*offers a number of Graduate Assistantships
The Student Affairs Leadership and Practice program graduate assistant is expected to devote 20 hours per week for 16 weeks per semester to assistantship duties. Specific duties of graduate assistants will vary according to the department’s need. In general, however, they will be organizational, instructional assignments, and/or research assignments.


Residence Life: Kilcawley, Cafaro and Lyden Houses, Leadership, and Programming
Assistantships are live-in positions.

GA’s manage 24/7 front desk, work in cross-functional teams with Housing Coordinators, RAs, and campus departments, and serve in on-call rotation. Assistantships include responsibilities in facilities management, housing operations, and summer conference planning in addition to residence life areas of programming, publications, and our Living/Learning community. These assistantships includes: $700 monthly stipend (10-month), room, board, and tuition.

Student Life: Emerging Leader Program
Assists with the overall operation of the Office of Student Life. Serves as primary coordinator of Emerging Leader Program, including administrative responsibilities and delivery of programs and services. Provides assistance in the administration of judicial affairs. Participates in the development of programming schedules for Welcome Week and assist student organization with development of programming. Because of the wide range of student service areas involved the GA/I will have extremely broad experience that incorporates both direct and administrative activities.

Thiel College : YSU Graduate Assistantships at Thiel College

Youngstown State University and Thiel College collaborate to offer Student Affairs graduate students at YSU the opportunity to work as graduate assistants at Thiel College, a private liberal arts college located 45 minutes from YSU. Thiel reimburses YSU for the student’s fall, spring, and summer tuition as well as pays the student a $ 10,000 stipend with room, board, and benefits included. Graduate students serve as Resident Directors at Thiel College and work closely with the First Year Experience program
