Academic advisement and registration are important parts of the EARLY-SOAR and SOAR programs and will be conducted in individual or group sessions according to each academic college. During the advising sessions, an advisor will explain University and program requirements and assist you in deciding which courses to take during your first semester. Academic advisement is a "two-way street" and an opportunity for you to ask questions and discuss various options with an advisor. Please plan to be an active participant in your advising session. Since the information you will receive in the sessions prior to your advisement session is very important, you will not be permitted to register unless you attend all orientation sessions.
Academic advisement and registration are not part of the TSO program. Transfer students receive a letter from the University Registrar stating their date of registration and academic college for advisement.
A registration fee will not be collected prior to orientation program attendance; however, a $75 processing/matriculation fee will be assessed to all first-year students and a $25 processing/matriculation fee will be assessed to all new transfer students upon completing the registration process. The one-time fee covers the expenses associated with orientation and registration and will be included in your first bill. Please be aware that once a student has completed the orientation and registration processes, there will be no refunds of the processing/matriculation fee.
If you are interested in on-campus housing, applications are available through the Office of Housing and Residence Life, located on the first floor of Kilcawley House (see campus map). You may stop by the office to pick up an application, visit their website, or call (330) 941-3547.
All orientation program participants should plan to park in the M1 parking deck on Wick Avenue (see campus map). You will need to present your parking voucher (included in your confirmation packet) to the parking attendant so that you may park free of charge.
Based on review of a student's ACT or SAT scores, all first-time, first-year students attending EARLY-SOAR or SOAR will be required to take the COMPASS Mathematical Test (CMT), the Composition Placement Test (CPT) and/or COMPASS Reading Test(CRT) before advisement and registration. The results of these tests will allow our academic advisors to place you in the appropriate English, Reading, and Mathematics courses. You should also be aware that certain majors will require Foreign Language coursework; students may opt to fulfill the Foreign Language requirement or place into an intermediate level course by taking the Foreign Language Placement Test (FLPT). See Placement Testing for further information.
For your convenience, the placements test are offered several dates prior to the orientation programs. If you do not take these tests prior to your orientation program, you will not be permitted to register for classes. In addition, you will be required to take the CPT, CMT, and/or CRT before the end of your first semester at YSU. If you are unable to attend your scheduled placement testing date or if you have special needs and require accommodations to take the tests, contact the Comprehensive Testing Services at (330) 941-1343.
If you are a student with a documented physical, psychological, and/or learning disability (permanent or temporary), in order to receive educational modifications, you are required to register with the Office of Disability Services at (330) 941-1372 or (330) 941-1534 (TTD) so that your disability may be accommodated. If you have a disability that will require special accommodations on the day you attend an orientation program, contact CSP Orientation Services at (330) 941-2103 or e-mail us prior to that date so that the appropriate arrangements can be made.
A listing of the tentative tuition and fees for the current academic year as well as billing dates and payment deadlines will be distributed at your orientation program. Payment methods for tuition and fees include check, money order, credit card, financial aid, or a combination of these methods. Additional tuition and fee information can be found on-line through the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships.
