Middle School Model United Nations


The Middle School program is designed to provide an interdisciplinary educational experience integrating concepts and material from Social Studies, English, and Health.  The program is coordinated with the regular 6th and 7th grade curriculum, designed to reinforce basic concepts while provide opportunities to develop and refine basic skills.  As with all Global Education Programs, the Middle School program is based on simulation, roleplaying, and interactive educational pedagogy.

           Based on Liberty’s 6th and 7th grade curriculum, five primary and five secondary learning objectives were developed. Each objectives is consistent with the learning objectives outlined in the Social Studies portion of the ninth grade Ohio Proficiency Examination. (Passing The Ohio Ninth Grade Proficiency Test., E&A Publishing, 1996)
 
Primary learning objectives include,
 
1) to introduce and reinforce the concept of globalization,
 
2) increased awareness of the interdependence of the global community,
 
3) introduction to issues and current events that will shape student’s future,
 
4) develop an increased appreciation for the distinctiveness and diversity of human cultures, and
 
5) develop an understanding and appreciation of the Legislative process and parliamentary procedure, or “how a bill becomes law”. 
 
           
Secondary learning objective focus on reinforcing basic skills consistent with both the primary learning objective and simulation pedagogy.  Secondary learning objectives include;
 
            1) communication skills,
 
            2) writing skills,
 
            3) research, including the Internet,
 
            4) group/team work, and
 
            5) critical thinking and problem solving.
 
 
              The Middle School program focuses on applied international problems, and can be customized to focus on a wide range of international issues.  The three simulations offered are The World Health Organization (WHO), and the Security Council.  Each Simulation is a complete and independent module that includes five Handbooks and a set of research links:
