Twelve Veterans of the Korean War founded Zeta Phi Fraternity in 1956. The Men were older than many students and they wanted to belong to a fraternity, but they were not willing to undergo the childish antics that were part of the existing fraternities' pledge programs. Before long, the group occupied a house on Park Avenue and adopted a constitution and the motto, "Cerebrum et Lacertus," or "Brains and Brawn." Black and gray were the official colors. By 1964, president Edward Knoop was promoting the idea of national affiliation, and Phi Kappa Tau became the leading candidate. Director of chapter development, Thomas C. Cunningham made a personal visit to Zeta Phi on May 5, 1965, and soon thereafter the group voted to work toward a Phi Kappa Tau charter. The installation took place on January 29, 1967, with National Counselor, Mel Dettra taking the place of the National President, Warren Parker, who was caught in a Chicago snowstorm. Charter president, Ronald L. Wasiluk accepted the Gamma Pi charter from National Secretary, Jack L. Anson. Since that time, Phi Kappa Tau, Gamma Pi has become a pillar of strength for the community and Youngstown State University.
