When Ethel Hedgemen Lyle founded Alpha Kappa Alpha at Howard University in 1908, it was her dream and conviction that an organization would bring the women students of the university closer together in the bonds of a sisterhood. This sisterhood would also be a channel through which these women could dedicate themselves to a higher standard of scholastic achievement and service to help improve the status of women. The Delta Delta chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. was chartered in 1953 at Youngstown State University. Delta Delta's major annual event is the Holly Jolly Celebration, which is done during the Christmas season and benefits children ages 3-12. The event allows the area to see what these young ladies are doing for the community. Local talent is usually brought in to give the children exposure to the different ways of celebrating the holiday season.

Alpha Kappa Alpha's "SPIRIT" of service is most evident in area's such as the Education-Young Authors Program, Health-Center for Women's Health, Cardiovascular Health and Economics-Tax Freedom Day.

ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY, INC., ETA ETA CHAPTER

Flower: White Rose
National Founding: 1920
National Website: http://www.zphib1920.org/

Zeta Phi Beta was founded January 16, 1920, on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. Its founders created Zeta Phi Beta because they believed that elitism and socializing had overshadowed what should be the real mission of sororities to address and correct the problems of society, particularly in the African-American community. The "Five Pearls" believed that active interest, high principles and standards and a good scholarly average were the things that should determine membership rather than having a certain look or status. The sorority was founded on the principles of Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood. Zeta Phi Beta is the only NPHC sorority that is constitutionally bound to a brother fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma. Two of its members, A. Langston Taylor and Charles Taylor, were instrumental in helping Zeta Phi Beta become established.
