OPTIONAL
RECRUITMENT EVENTS
INFORMATION
SESSIONS
What
to expect: Here at YSU, we like to start
things off with a couple days where we provide information
to you about who we are and what we do. Attending
this event lets you catch a glimpse of what sorority
women do – and helps you make a decision on
whether or not being in a sorority is for you. You’ll
also get a chance to meet the Rho Gammas or Recruitment
Counselors: sorority women who are there to help you
through the recruitment process.
What to wear: This event is the most
casual. A t-shirt and shorts are perfectly fine but
you’re also welcome to dress up a bit. Remember
that this is the sorority’s first impression
of you so dress tastefully!
What to talk about: Since Information
Sessions are relaxed and informal, you’ll probably
be walking from table to table. If you don’t
have a chance to have an in-depth conversation with
everyone you meet, don’t worry about it! This
event is intended to give you a taste of what sororities
are – so ask! Ask about Greek life in general,
about individual sororities, or about personal experiences.
Don’t forget to tell them a little about you
since they want to get to know you, too!

REQUIRED
EVENTS
OPEN
HOUSE ROUND
What
to expect: During this round each sorority
holds their private event so they are each in a separate
room. Rho Gammas will be there to help escort you
from party to party. Each chapter has their own schedule
of activities – be prepared to get up and move
around! These 20-minute events are fairly short and
the time will probably whiz right by as you visit
all four chapters. Be sure to ask any questions you
have but also make sure to enjoy yourself! Don’t
be surprised if you’re greeting with clapping
and a song or chant – they’re excited
to see you!
What to wear: You might want to wear
something a little nicer than a t-shirt, but the dress
code still falls solidly into the casual category.
Comfortable shorts, capris, khakis or jeans are all
perfectly viable options.
What to talk about: At this point,
you’ve decided that being in a sorority is definitely
something for you; now you just need to figure out
where your best match is. Ask questions that will
help you learn more about the individual sororities.
Tell them about you, too! There will probably be some
fun activities that can provide some great conversation
starters.
PHILANTHROPY ROUND
What
to expect: This round is very similar to
the Open House Round but the parties are 30 minutes
in length and the chapters are focused on sharing
their philanthropy projects with you. You’ll
get to attend up to three chapters’ parties
and discover what each does for their community and
how they do it. They may even have some plans for
you to get your first chance to help out the community!
They’ve gotten to know you a little better over
the past few days and will be excited to see you again
– they’ll probably greet you with songs
and cheers again! If you have questions between parties,
ask the Rho Gammas. They’re there to help you
through the recruitment process and give you advice
on questions to ask.
What to wear: Again, the attire for
this round is casual. Anything from shorts to capris
to jeans to khakis works great!
What to talk about: As the day will
be focused on the chapters’ efforts to promote
their various philanthropies, this is a great chance
to ask them what service projects they do on campus.
You might just be surprised at the what these women
can accomplish!
PREFERENCE
What
to expect: This is the most important and
meaningful event of the week. This serious hour long
event is where you’ll make your final decision
on what sorority you want to call your own. Listen
carefully to the words they say and the songs they
sing – that’s where they’ll tell
you the essence of their beliefs. This round is often
a very emotional step in the recruitment process because
each chapter is sharing a ceremony with you that reveals
their whole heart and soul. After the conclusion of
the parties you’ll return to sign a Preference
card stating which sorority you want to call your
own. Think back on the past week and recall the conversations
and activities which made you feel most at home. Remember
that this is your decision and nobody else’s
– don’t feel pressured to make a particular
decision. Towards the end of the night you’ll
get a chance to guess which chapter each Rho Gamma
is from. Their identities will be revealed later as
a part of the Bid Day festivities.
What to wear: This round is the one
where you want to dress to impress! Your Sunday best
or a cocktail dress are both appropriate. Each chapter
will share a short ceremony with you so you want to
be respectful in attire as well as in attitude.
What to talk about: Pay close attention
to what the sisters tell you about their sorority.
Tonight is the night when you’ll make a decision
that will affect the rest of your life!
BID DAY
What to expect: The last and most
exciting event of the week! At this event you’ll
receive an invitation to join a sorority. Recruitment
is a mutual selection process where your Preference
card is matched with the sororities’ preferences.
After discovering what chapter each Rho Gamma belongs
to, you’ll get to join your new sisters in a
celebratory sisterhood event!
What to wear: This event is casual:
shorts, jeans or capris will all go great with the
t-shirt you’ll get from your new sisters. (You
will have a chance to go home and change between Preference
and Bid Day.)
