Housing & Residence Life Student Office Assistant

Position Description

  • Provide customer service as the “face” of Housing & Residence Life (H&RL) while working primarily from the main office reception area. This includes welcoming students and guests as they enter the building, answering questions that arise, providing directions around campus, and generally being helpful.
  • Assist in management of lockouts for residents; provide spare keys as need and follow-up with students who have not turned in spare keys
  • Understand the housing application process to help troubleshoot and explain the steps of the application to prospective and current residents
  • Provide tours throughout residence halls, as well as provide information to perspective students and parents about the campus residential experience and why it is an ideal environment for Freshman students to consider in contrast to other available housing options
  • Represent Housing & Residence Life in official recruitment efforts and other larger scale University events and departmentally-sponsored programs, such as Penguin Preview Days, Family Day and other open house events where all H&RL staff are expected to participate, represent and provide support
  • Competently and accurately communicate information about available campus resources to students in need of support or assistance (Accessibility Services, Financial Aid, First Year Student Services, the Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, etc)
  • Perform general clerical assignments; ability to answer phones, run errands, and convey messages; Assist in compiling materials for special projects; must be able to respond to a variety of questions asked in person or by telephone to assist people; filing and other duties as assigned.
  • Proactively maintain a clean and organized front desk area. Complete daily and weekly tasks as needed.
  • Sort mail and log packages. Check packages out to students.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with, professional staff and other support staff within the division.
  • Assists with a variety of projects and completes other duties as assigned for Housing & within the division.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Full-time student in good academic and conduct standing with Youngstown State University
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills appropriate to a service-oriented environment
  • Ability to cooperate flexibly with fellow student employees and staff members
  • Ability to learn basic information related to Housing & Residence Life and the University in general
  • General clerical skills including use of basic office equipment, filing, copying, sorting/distributing mail, etc.
  • Commitment to confidentiality, organization, neatness, punctuality, and a positive attitude

Reports to: Executive Assistant, The Division of Student Affairs

Hours Per Week: A minimum of 5 hours per week and a maximum of 25 hours per week

Wage: Hourly rate as established by the University, which is currently $10.00 per hour

Dates of Employment: H&RL Student Office Assistants will submit their schedules each semester to determine availability and specific assigned shifts for the entire academic semester.
