The Advisory Committee

The Judaic and Holocaust Studies Program Advisory Committee in its current form is the result of the merging of two Youngstown State University committees dedicated to the promotion of Jewish Studies programming on Youngstown State University campus. The original Judaic and Holocaust studies advisory committee was formed when in 1997, an anonymous source donated $100,000 to the university to underwrite the creation of a Jewish Studies program. That program was to reflect the university’s commitment to teaching Holocaust and Jewish History, Judaism, and Hebrew. That committee was merged with the longer existing committee of the Schermer Scholar-in-Residence program. The program, established through a grant made in 1980 by the Schermer Charitable Trusts, was designed to bring major figures to campus. The Schermer committee was made up of a combination of university faculty and personnel as well as members of the wider Youngstown area community reflecting the Schermer Charitable Trusts’ wish that the Schermer Scholar-in-Residence program serve the campus as well as the wider community. Today, the Judaic and Holocaust Studies Program Advisory Committee is made up of members of the university and wider community. They not only serve to advise the Judaic and Holocaust Studies faculty on programming but are active leaders in the planning and implementation of activities which serve Youngstown State University students and the larger community.
