Fall 2004 Review:

Book Cover Double Helix

Nancy Werlin

Dial Books for Young Readers

© 2004

Double Helix, by Nancy Werlin, was stupid. It had a great plot, bringing together issues with family and the ever popular human stem cell debate. I recommend it to readers at a sophomore or Jr. high school level. There are, however, some mature sexual themes not appropriate for younger readers.
The book would have been great had it not been so similar to another book I read. Shadow of the Hegemon and Shadow Puppets by Orson Scott Card were both basically the same story. There's some genetic disorder that will eventually kill the person, so the make sure there children will never have to suffer the same way.
Double Helix happened to be more believable, however, than the other two. The way stem cell research was going till it was shut down, it would be quite possible that genes could be changed to eliminate disease. Even create the super-humans that the book revolves around.
The writing style was very easy to understand with only a few technical terms. I finished it in only two days. It was a great book for anyone who hasn't read the other two previously mentioned books. If you have you'll guess the whole story be the second chapter.
