This is a very typical book. It
isn’t great, and it isn’t too dull. Basically, it’s another recap of the
Great Depression. I can be narrow-minded, but history just isn’t my favorite
subject, so nonfiction is usually a drag for me to read. This book fell into
that category. I could have learned something, but I wasn’t really soaking up
the information while reading. The author did a good job of using his
words to illustrate the important matters and events of the 1930’s, but a
reader would need to return his interest and dedication, which I sadly could
not, to truly appreciate this work of literature. I think this book is the type
to materialize in a school library and only be read when needed for a project.
Unfortunately, there are many similar dust-gathering books at our own school
library, never read unless a project is assigned or the librarian blindly tries
to pin a book on you, even when he or she hasn’t read it, either. The project case is the only instance in which I would recommend this book. If notes were taken, a very nice project indeed could be made from use of this book alone. Until the time a project is assigned to me, however, I don’t think I’ll read this book much again. ~ Emma Shebat, grade 7, Canfield Village Middle School
