Fall 2004 Review:

Book Cover The First Part Last

Angela Johnson

Simon and Schuster Children's, 2003

Bobby was a normal teenager living in the city until his 16th birthday. On his birthday, he found out his girlfriend Nia was pregnant. He was going to be a father. His life seemed so great until he made this one mistake. His whole life would change. It was difficult to tell both of their families. Both sets of parents were astonished. Bobby and Nia contemplated adoption, but it just didn't seem right. Nia's pregnancy was difficult for she only wanted it to be over. She encounters a rare sickness and Bobby is left with Feather. He takes on the major responsibility and becomes a father. He embraces her all the time. She loves to be held. He loves his daughter and tells her of her mother often. Bobby's life would forever be altered. Once he graduates, he moves from New York to Ohio to raise Feather in a nice hometown environment. His brother lives there and tells him it is perfect like heaven.

I really enjoyed this book. It displays of facts and consequences of your actions. It displays of the danger teens can get themselves in. This book also teaches you responsibility. This was the main idea of the book. Bobby rose up to the challenge and became a father. This book left you thinking from the first word until the last. Angela Johnson created a wonderful piece of literature.
