Fall 2004 Review:

Book Cover The Last Guardian of Evenness

John C. Wright

Tom Doherty Associates, 2004

Galen has a dream he hears the sea bell ring. The sea bell was an alarm used as a signal to use the last horn against the oncoming darkness. Galen goes into the dream world to find Azreal de Gray and find some answers. In a hospital a lady is dying; her name is Wendy. Her husband Raven makes a deal with Kosheis to take another’s life to let her live. Unfortunately that life is Galen's. He has been asleep for four months. When Kosheis finishes Wendy wakes up and Galen is there. Galen tells her of everything that happened to him and that she needs to find the talismans and the last horn to combat the oncoming evil. He also told Wendy Azreal de Gray tricked him and got him killed.

I thought this book was interesting but I did not like it a whole lot. It did have its moments that I liked but the author skipped too fast from one person's situation to another. It was very creative; he took me into another world. However, the characters were not that believable; I thought they could have been written better. The best part to this book I thought was the plot. It developed building momentum until it was the end of the book and you couldn’t stop reading. Yet there were a lot of slow parts and some boring speeches. I suggest this book to high school students. All in all this book was ok and I didn’t like a whole lot.
