| Jambar Records -- Historical Background |
|
The Jambar is a student newspaper published twice weekly during fall and spring semesters and weekly during summer sessions. Free copies are distributed throughout campus, and subscriptions by mail are available for a yearly fee. Currently, the Jambar is also available online at www.thejambar.com. The Jambar covers campus events, YSU sports, and local entertainment. It also reports on national news and entertainment, such as CD and movie reviews. Students work as editors, reporters, writers, and photographers. The newspaper serves as a forum for opinions in the editorial section and letters to the editor. Burke Lyden founded the Jambar in 1931 and published the first issue on January 14, 1931. In October of 1931, the Jambar announced its plan to change from mimeographed form to standard newsprint format. The masthead has changed frequently over the years, as has the size of the newspaper. Beginning in 1967, the Jambar began publishing an annual April Fool's edition, in which all articles were humorous and false. This tradition continued through 1998. Since its founding, the newspaper was awarded nine Associated Collegiate Press A l l - American honors. Youngstown State University's English Department offers journalism major; students may write for the Jambar as part of that curriculum. |
