Navarro Executive Fellows Program

The Navarro Executive Fellows (NEF) Program is a mentoring-work experience initiative for incoming ALANA (African American/Black; Latino/Latina/Hispanic; Asian/Pacific Islander; Native American/Indian, etc.) freshmen with Youngstown State University’s Executive/Administrative Leadership.

The Navarro Executive Fellows Program was named in honor of Shorty and Elba Navarro.  However, the NEF Program is funded exclusively through the Youngstown State University Foundation, separately from the Navarro Family Endowment.

The growth and development of diverse students is important to YSU, therefore the Navarro Executive Fellows program was developed to mentor, motivate through employment; enhance academic success and personal growth; encourage campus engagement; assist with career development; integrate work experience with classroom learning; foster leadership; and increase retention and diversity on campus for under-resourced ALANA students.

A cohort of incoming freshmen will be chosen as Fellows and will be matched with YSU’s Executive Leadership for two years during fall and spring semesters.  Executives will provide insight and networking as well as help Fellows set goals and stay on track academically, professionally and personally.
