Applicants should have
completed an undergraduate degree in English, theater, foreign languages, or
a related field. Students applying for the MFA degree who do not have any of
these undergraduate majors may be admitted on the basis of writing
excellence. While the NEOMFA Program does not require the GRE (Graduate
Record Examination) or consider GRE scores during the admissions process,
individual gateway schools may require it, especially for assistantship
consideration, and applicants should consult the Gateway’s Graduate
Coordinator for further information
TO APPLY TO A
CONSORTIAL UNIVERSITY:
Apply for admittance
to the Department of English through the Graduate School at one or more
of the four consortium universities. The MFA program is located in the
Departments of English on each campus.
Application should
include a letter indicating the degree program to which you are applying
(Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Creative Writing.
You will need to
arrange to send official transcripts from all schools attended and
degrees completed to the graduate school at your chosen university, as
well as three letters of recommendation from those familiar with your
academic and creative work.
The online
application system for each university will give you directions for
submitting letters of recommendation, transcripts, and any other
materials required. Follow the links below to

TO APPLY TO THE PROGRAM:
Send
a one-page statement of goals along with a portfolio of creative
work in your genre to the NEOMFA Office
Statement of goals:
We are interested in knowing more about
your background in creative writing: What authors have had an important
influence on your work and why? Who have you studied with and how has
their influence been important to you?
Your one-page statement of goals should
include:

Your current career goals, and
-
Compatibility of these goals with the
purpose and design of the NEOMFA.

Specific reading and writing projects
in area of specialization.

Degrees, special workshops attended, or
other relevant experience.

Honors and awards.
-
Publications (including date,
publisher, page numbers).

Relevant work experience
Portfolio:
15 pages of your
work in poetry or literary translation, or 30 pages of fiction, creative
non-fiction, or drama. Please note that for literary translation
submissions, the original work must be included. The original will not
be counted toward the page total.
Both the
statement and portfolio should be combined into one Microsoft Word
document (.doc or .rtf, with the statement as the first element) and emailed as an attachment to the attention of
the Director:

know the decision of the Admissions Committee.

for Spring admission is October 15th
The deadline for portfolios for Fall
admission is February 15th
If you also intend
to apply for an assistantship (Spring applicants only) please check with
the Campus Coordinator at your gateway university. Deadlines for
assistantship applications vary by university and may be earlier than
the MFA portfolio deadlines.
