Biddinger

Wed  5:20-7:50

3300:689-805

This class will read and discuss single-author poetry books that take risks and embrace strangeness, while still connecting with audiences.  We will consider the surreal, the absurd, the disturbing, and the humorous, including works by Jason Bredle, John Gallaher, Matthea Harvey, and Dorothea Lasky.  Through both scholarly and creative assignments, students will learn how to use elements of the unexpected in their own work.
Inventing the Truth: The Craft & Theory of Memoir YSU Brady Th  5:10-7:50 English 6968
In this course, we will survey the expanding field of creative non-fiction and delve into its literary and historical origins. We will explore the boundaries between memoir and autobiographical fiction, and develop abilities to write and critique life stories in prose and narrative poetry. We will also address the phenomenon of memoir-writing in relation to the genres of fiction and poetry to discover how memoirs redefine the complex relationship between reader and author, and between world and word.
