AWARDS & SCHOLARSHIPS:

 

Association of Writers and Writing Programs has a number of awards and competitions open to students of Creative Writing Programs at member Universities (including CSU & KSU). 

 

The Coulter Emerging Poets and Writers Scholarship was established by William Lee Coulter. The fund provides a $4,000 scholarship for UAkron students who are emerging poets and writers. Scholarships are awarded to three students each year.

 

The CSU Creative Writing Contest Approximately $3,000 in tuition scholarships will be awarded to winners of the Cleveland State University Student Writing Contest. Writers who hold scholarships or assistantships are encouraged to enter so that the CSU Poetry Center can honor their achievement.

 

The Dorothy Shreve Bauer Scholarship, an endowed fund established in 1986, provides scholarship assistance for UAkron graduate students of excellent caliber. Endowment income may be awarded to candidate or candidates majoring in English selected by the Graduate Program Committee within the department.

 

The Leonard Trawick Scholarship in Creative Writing is an award given to a graduate student in creative writing on the basis of artistic and academic merit. Applications are evaluated in March, and the award winner in announced in April, at the department's annual Reception to recognize graduating seniors, masters candidates, and award winners. The scholarship is for $1,000. Students wanting more information should contact Prof. Sheila Schwartz, s.schwartz@csu.ohio.edu.

 

The Zora M. Ledinko Endowed Memorial Scholarship.  Zora M. Ledinko was a talented poet and painter. The scholarship is to be awarded to a talented UAkron student in the arts, preferably in poetry. Recipients will be determined by the University Scholarship Committee with input from the Department of English Scholarship Committee.

 

COMPETITIONS & PRIZES:

 

The Akron Series in Poetry was founded to bring to the public writers who speak in original and compelling voices. Each year, The University of Akron Press will offer the Akron Poetry Prize, a competition open to all poets writing in English. The winning poet will receive $1,000 and publication of his or her book. The final selection will be made by a nationally prominent poet. Other manuscripts may also be considered for publication in the series.

The AWP Award Series in the Novel, Poetry, Fiction, and Creative Nonfiction is an annual competition for the publication of excellent new book-length works of poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction. Winners in the Award Series receive a $2,000 cash honorarium plus publication of their book by University of Pittsburgh Press, University of Massachusetts Press, or University of Georgia Press.

CSU Poetry Center Prizes: First Book Competition & Open Competition. In each category, $1,000 and publication in the CSU Poetry Series is offered for the best full-length volume of original poetry submitted between November and February by poets who have not published a full-length book of poetry or by Ohio Poets. 

The Donald A. & Laura Jane Keister Prize honors the memory of Donald A. Keister, a former chair of the UA Department of English and former dean of the UA College of Arts and Sciences. The essay prize will be awarded each April for an outstanding essay in literary studies written by a UA graduate student and chosen by a committee of English graduate literature faculty selected by the Chair of the UA English department.

 

The Intro Journals Project  is an AWP literary competition for the discovery & publication of the best new works by students currently enrolled in the programs of AWP (including CSU & KSU). Winners of this contest receive a $50 cash honorarium and are published in Hayden's Ferry Review, Mid-American Review, Puerto del Sol, Controlled Burn, Quarterly West, Tampa Review, Willow Springs, and Artful Dodge.

 

The Journal, the literary magazine of The Ohio State University, selects one full-length manuscript of poetry each year for publication by The Ohio State University Press. In addition to publication, the winning author receives the Charles B. Wheeler prize of $3,000. Entries of at least 48 typed pages of original poetry must be postmarked during the month of September. Entries postmarked later than September 30 will be returned unread.
 

The Sam Ella Dukes Memorial Poetry Prize honors the memory of Sam Ella Dukes, who taught English in the public schools of Florida and South Carolina for over forty years. The prize will be awarded each April by a committee of English department faculty appointed by the chair of the department. The prize is open to any undergraduate or graduate student at UAkron.

 

The Stan and Tom Wick Poetry Prize is offered annually to a poet who has not previously published a full-length collection of poems. The Wick Ohio Chapbook Competition offers two categories of prizes: Poets currently residing in Ohio may enter the Open Chapbook Competition and Poets currently enrolled in Ohio institutions of higher education may enter the Student Chapbook Competition. All three prizes include publication through the Kent State University Press and are made possible through the Wick Poetry Center, which is directed by Maggie Anderson.

 

The Whiskey Island Magazine Annual Literary Contest in Poetry and Fiction: Prize for Winning Entry in Each Category:  $500 plus publication. Poetry:  3 – 5 poems, Fiction:  5,000 words maximum. Submission deadline March 31, 2008. Entries are to be original and previously unpublished. Name, contact information and titles on cover letter only. Entry Fee:  $10, payable to Whiskey Island Magazine. Non-winners considered for publication.  Mail Entry to:  Whiskey Island Magazine Contest, Marilyn Werner, Budget Officer, Department of Student Life, Cleveland State University, 2121 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, Ohio 44115.  2008 Judges are: Denise Duhamel (poetry) and Karen Joy Fowler (fiction).
