Gilman International Scholarship winners "a mark of excellence for YSU"
Antonette M. Scharsu of Hubbard, a senior majoring in Politics and International Relations and Russian language, is the latest Youngstown State University student to win the prestigious Gilman International Scholarship to study abroad.
Scharsu is studying in St. Petersburg, Russia, this Fall semester.
She is the 18th YSU student since 2012 to be selected a Gilman scholar. In all, YSU Gilman scholars have received nearly $60,000 in scholarships and studied in Russia, Thailand, Spain, India, China, United Kingdom, Turkey, South Korea, Cyprus, Germany, Dominican Republic and Japan. This past summer, YSU student Jasmyne Huckaba studied in Chiang Mai, Thailand, as a Gilman scholar.
“The success of YSU students in applying for and being awarded the Gilman Scholarship is a mark of excellence for YSU,” said Nate Myers, associate provost for International and Global Initiative.
“The staff of the International Programs Office is committed to helping lower barriers for YSU students to study abroad and reach their full-potential. It is a credit to the students, the strength of the academic program at YSU and the careful study-abroad advising that our students receive that YSU students are able to reliably apply for and are selected for this prestigious scholarship.”
Scharsu, who graduated from Hubbard High School in 2013, works at the Youngstown Country Club, is a member of Simply Slavic and the Saxon Club and is an active volunteer at New Lease on Life Animal Shelter. The daughter of Ray and Adele Scharsu, she speaks Russian, Spanish and English, as well as American Sign Language, and aspires for a career in federal law enforcement.
The scholarship is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
