Dana School of Music presents choral, percussion, guitar performances

The Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University presents three diverse performances this week: the Fall Choral Concert, a recital by the Guitar Ensemble and a concert by the Percussion Ensemble.

The week starts with the Choral Concert, titled “Choral Banquet in Praise, Beauty, Love, and Nature,” 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 7:30 p.m. at St. Columba Cathedral, 159 W. Rayen Ave., Youngstown.

Four Dana vocal groups consisting of 60 students - the Dana Chorale, University Chorus, Dana Chorale and Symphonic Chorus – perform a variety of classical and contemporary pieces. The repertoire is highlighted by Haydn’s Te Deum, Five Love Songs by Edvarg Grieg and Handel’s Hallelujah from Messiah. The concert is free and open to the public; a free-will offering will be taken.

The performances continue 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, with a concert by the YSU Percussion Ensemble at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Avenue, Youngstown. The concert is free and open to the public. Nineteen students will perform selections by Colgrass, Kreutz, Faini, Matheny and Michael Burritt, among others. Parking is available in the church lot.

Rounding out the concerts is a performance of the Dana Guitar Ensemble 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 5 in Bliss Recital Hall on campus. Additionally, guest artist Brad Shepik will conduct a master class and perform at noon Friday, Nov. 6 in Bliss Hall, Room 2222. Shepik is a Washington State native who holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music from Cornish College of the Arts and a Master’s Degree in Jazz Composition and Performance from New York University. He has recorded seven albums as a leader of four different ensembles. Both the recital and the master class are free and open to the public. Parking is available in the M1 Wick Avenue parking deck for a nominal fee.
