The grass is always greener...on Lincoln Avenue

Wow, that grass along the sidewalks on the new and improved Lincoln Avenue is beautiful. So green. So alive. So perfect. It almost looks fake.

Wait a second...it is fake?

Construction workers topped off the Lincoln upgrades by installing artificial grass along the sidewalks and curbs.

John Hyden, executive director of Facilities, said the strip of grass suffers significant damage in the winter from road salt and suffers in hot dry summers because it is not irrigated. That means Grounds crews spend a lot of time patching and fixing.

“We thought we’d give it a couple winters and see how it goes,” he said.

Artificial grass is becoming more and more popular in landscaping, and Hyden said the university may look into installing more if this test run is successful.

No word yet if the golf team is going to set up a putting green.
