State recognizes YSU for GIVEBack GOForward

State officials came to campus earlier this semester to recognize YSU’s leadership in the GIVEBack GOForward program.

John Carey, chancellor of the Ohio Department of Higher Education, and Stephanie Loucka, director of the Ohio Department of Aging, presented a certificate of recognition to President Jim Tressel. Jimmie Bruce, president of Eastern Gateway Community College, also received a certificate.

YSU and EGCC launched the initiative three years ago. The program allows Ohio residents age 60 and older to earn free college tuition by volunteering in their communities.

Carey also was joined later by Chip Tansil, director of the Ohio Department of Veterans Services, for a meeting in the YSU Veterans Resource Center with about a dozen YSU veteran students. The group discussed the challenges veterans face transitioning back to college.
