STEM and Football? Learn about it at YSU MathFest Oct. 13

Juniors and seniors from more than 40 high schools come to Youngstown State University Thursday, Oct. 13, to participate in MathFest, the largest annual event hosted by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

The event features 18 workshops by YSU faculty and students on a variety of topics, including “Are you a Terrorist?,” “Discovering the STEM Behind Football” and “The Mathematics of Brain Activity.”

In addition to the workshops, students are given the opportunity to meet YSU students, interact with YSU faculty members, and explore what it’s like to get an undergraduate degree in mathematics or a STEM-related field at YSU. In addition, each student is encouraged to participate in individual and/or mixed team mathematical competitions.

The day will conclude with guest speaker, Chris Swanson from Ashland University, giving a large group presentation on “Mathemagic!”

A continental breakfast is provided for the teachers, and each student will take home a YSU Math t-shirt along with a folder with information about careers in mathematics and STEM related fields.
