Summer internship program seeks employers, students

The Center for Nonprofit Leadership at Youngstown State University, housed in the Williamson College of Business Administration, has been awarded a $65,000 grant from the Raymond John Wean Foundation to implement the 2017 Nonprofit Leadership Summer Honors Internship Program.

“The Nonprofit Leadership Summer Honors Internship Program aims to provide meaningful, career-related experience to 10 qualified YSU students, which in turn fosters and develops their leadership skills to serve as effective leaders in the public and nonprofit employment sectors upon graduation,” said Laura Dewberry, director, YSU Center for Nonprofit Leadership.

“The program also benefits the selected host organizations by building capacity over a 12-week period as the students work on projects that help increase the impact made in the organizations’ important community work.”

The internship program is a biennial full-time (40 hours per week), 12-week summer internship program designed to provide 10 qualified YSU students with career-related work experience in a nonprofit or public sector organization.

The internships run from May 15 to Aug. 14. Students earn a minimum of $12 an hour. The internships are co-funded by the participating organizations at about 20 percent of the total cost of the internship. Also on a weekly rotation, each organization hosts a site visit, tour and professional development seminar for all participating students.

Nonprofit and public sector organizations in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties interested in participating and receiving a full-time co-funded intern for the summer of 2017 are encouraged to apply. Applications are available by contacting Laura Dewberry, director, YSU Center for Nonprofit Leadership, at LJMcCaskey@ysu.edu or 330-941-1870. Applications are due on Friday, Feb. 3.

Students applications will be accepted beginning mid-February. Only YSU students with a minimum of a 3.0 GPA and a declared major are eligible to apply. Participating students must be either seniors or graduate students by summer. Students who participate in the Summer Honors Internship Program are eligible to earn four hours of academic credit.
