This Week at YSU, Jan. 9, 2017

Sunday, Jan. 8, noon to 5 p.m. The Dana School of Music at YSU hosts the fifth annual Horn Workshop in Bliss Recital Hall on campus. The clinic, free and open to the public and musicians of all levels, is aimed at high school and college horn players. Guest clinician is Richard King, currently serving as fourth horn of the Cleveland Orchestra. While reservations are not mandatory, students are encouraged to confirm their attendance by emailing srmickens@ysu.edu.

Monday, Jan. 9. First day of Spring semester classes. Opening week features a variety of activities, including a Student Organization Fair, fitness challenges, yoga and nutrition activities, the grand opening of the Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center Adventure Rec Resource Center, a trivia contest, basketball, hockey, swimming, diving and much more.

Monday, Jan. 9 through Jan. 27. YSU hosts the 2017 Northeastern Ohio Scholastic Art Awards Exhibition in Bliss Hall. Showcasing artwork from students in Mahoning, Trumbull, Columbiana and Ashtabula counties in grades 7 to 12, the exhibition runs in the Judith Rae Solomon Gallery on the second floor of Bliss Hall and in the Art Department on the fourth floor. The Gallery is open weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. More than 40 schools are participating.

Tuesday and Wednesday, Jan. 9 and 10, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. YSU hosts the first of three blood drives on campus this semester to benefit the American Red Cross. Other drives will be Feb. 13 and 15 and March 28 and 29. All drives will be in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center on campus and are open to the public. Individuals are able to donate a pint of blood every 56 days. Donors are encouraged to eat a meal and hydrate prior to giving blood and to bring a list of any medications they are taking. A photo ID is required at the time of donation. Thursday, Jan. 12. The men’s and women’s basketball teams play a doubleheader in Beeghly Center. The women take on UIC at 5:15 p.m., followed by the mean against Valparaiso at 7:45 p.m. More at www.ysusports.com.

Friday, Jan. 13, 6 p.m. The YSU swimming and diving team take on St. Francis (Pa.) in the Beeghly Natatorium. The squad also faces IUPUI at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, also in the Beeghly Natatorium.

Friday, Jan. 13, 6 p.m. The Penguins’ women’s tennis team volleys against Eastern Michigan at the Boardman Tennis Center.

Saturday, Jan. 14. The men’s and women’s basketball teams play their second doubleheader of the week in Beeghly Center. The women take on Valparaiso at 4:30 p.m., followed by the men against UIC at 7 p.m. More at www.ysusports.com.
