YSU kicks off academic year with Welcome Week; concert parking changes announced

Youngstown State University kicks-off a new academic year this week as Fall Semester classes start on Wednesday, Aug. 21, and students partake in a variety of Welcome Week activities.

Among the events is IGNITE, a two-day activity where first-year students get to know faculty, staff and each other in preparation for the year ahead. The event is 1 to 9:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 21, and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 22, at various locations on campus.

Welcome Week also includes the annual Kilcawley Center Block Party, a Hip Hop Dance Clinic, Student Organization Fair, Meet the Marching Pride, Puppy Palooza and dozens of other activities.

Also featured on opening week is a concert by three-time Grammy winner Zac Brown Band 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 24, in Stambaugh Stadium. More than 20,000 fans are expected to attend the concert. Students can purchase discounted tickets at www.ticketmaster.com by entering their YSU Banner ID number in the “Offer Code” box at the top of the page to unlock the $20 per ticket discount. To accommodate concert-goers, the following parking lot restrictions are in place on Thursday, Aug. 24.

Lots closed all day:

  • F80 north of Stambaugh Stadium (closed Monday thru Thursday)
  • M70, M71, M72 and M66 located west of Fifth Avenue.
  • M63 located on Lincoln Avenue west of Fifth Avenue.

Lots closing early:

  • M-62, closed 2 p.m., vacate immediately.
  • M-61, closed 2 p.m., vacate immediately.
  • M-53, closed 2 p.m., vacate immediately.
  • M-60, Fifth Avenue parking deck, closed 2 p.m., vacate by 5 p.m.
  • F-55, closed 2 p.m., vacate by 5 p.m.
  • M-50, closed 2 p.m., vacate by 5 p.m.

Additional closings are possible and will be posted at entrances.

Anyone arriving to campus for permit parking after 2 p.m. should use the M-30 parking garage on Walnut Street and additional east side parking lots.
Signs will be posted and parking services individuals will be out directing motorists to the open lots.

In addition, YSU will run a shuttle on a loop from Walnut Street, the back entrance of the Wick Avenue deck, to Lincoln Avenue.
