YSU Phi Kappa Phi recognized as a Circle of Excellence Platinum Chapter

The Youngstown State University chapter of Phi Kappa Phi has been awarded the Circle of Excellence Platinum Chapter status from the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. This recognition is the highest commendation a chapter can receive and is given to chapters that excel in operations and demonstrate sustainability and vitality within Phi Kappa Phi.

The Circle of Excellence program was introduced in 2018 and recognized 74 chapters this year, including 13 with the Platinum distinction.

One of the oldest and most respected national academic honor societies, YSU’s chapter became the 143rd campus to receive a charter in 1972.

Thomas Wakefield, professor of Mathematics and Statistics and president of the YSU chapter of Phi Kappa Phi’s executive board is proud of his organization and the students within it.

“The YSU chapter of Phi Kappa Phi is honored to be recognized by the national organization for our work on campus and in the larger community,” stated Wakefield. “Many of our student members have been recognized with scholarships and other national honors by national Phi Kappa Phi which is a testament to the dedicated and hard-working students in our chapter.”

The Circle of Excellence Platinum honor is given to chapters who scored a perfect 100 on a criteria scale that evaluates chapter health indicators. By receiving the Platinum distinction, the Youngstown chapter is recognized as a thriving organization that holds annual initiations, upholds the Society Bylaws, regularly attends chapter training opportunities and submits a chapter-endorsed nominee to the Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship Program.

Chapters achieving the Circle of Excellence Platinum distinction receive a commendation letter from the Society sent to chapter officers and campus administration. special recognition on the Phi Kappa Phi website, specially-designed logo for use in chapter communications and a $300 cash award.

Phi Kappa Phi currently has chapters on more than 325 select campuses throughout the United States and the Philippines.The mission of Phi Kappa Phi is, “to recognize and promote academic excellence in all fields of higher education and to engage the community of scholars in service to others.” The Society believes that acknowledging and honoring those persons who have excelled in scholarship, in whatever field, will stimulate others to strive for excellence.
