YSU Pipino Series presents "Great American Songbook" April 5

Jazz singer and pianist Kate Reid performs popular American songs and jazz standards at a concert 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 5, in the Ford Family Recital Hall, Eleanor Beecher Flad Pavilion at the DeYor Performing Arts Center in downtown Youngstown.

The concert, titled “The Great American Songbook”, is part of Youngstown State University Cliffe College of Creative Arts and Communication’s Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series.

“Kate is another internationally acclaimed artist whose presence in the Youngstown area has been made possible this year by the Pipino Series,” said Phyllis Paul, dean of the Cliffe College. “The concert contains so many of the classics of our country’s cultural fabric – from Broadway musical theatre, to Hollywood movie musicals, to Tin Pan Alley. I know that Kate’s performance will be a remarkable journey through an important part of America’s musical legacy, creating a memorable evening for all.” 

Tickets are $28 for adults, $22 for senior citizens and free for YSU faculty, staff and students, as well as students from other schools in kindergarten through university age. Tickets are available by calling 330-744-0264 or at deyorpac.org.

In addition to the concert, Reid will conduct a master class 4 p.m. Thursday, April 4, in Bliss Hall’s Spotlight Theater on campus. The master class is free and open to the public.

A Northeast Ohio native, Reid is associate professor of Jazz Voice in the Studio Music and Jazz Department and director of Jazz Vocal Performance at the University of Miami Frost School of Music. Reid earned a bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies from Western Michigan University, a master’s in Music and a doctor of Musical Arts in Jazz Vocal Performance from the University of Miami. Her mother, Pat Prather, is a YSU alumna.

Reid appears as a duo and with her trio and quartet at jazz venues in the Los Angeles and Miami areas, is a featured performer presented by the Miami Jazz Co-op, and has worked with many of the great jazz musicians in southern California. Her latest CD, The Love I’m In, features tunes from the American songbook and has received extensive airplay on jazz radio stations throughout the United States, Canada, Europe and South Africa.
 
Reid is also a working studio/session singer in Los Angeles and boasts several film credits, and also lent her voice to network television series, commercial spots and backing vocals.
