Warren-Youngstown Sigma Alpha Iota Alumnae chapter presents scholarship, recital Oct. 12

The members of the Warren-Youngstown chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota Alumnae present second annual Amy Shields Memorial Scholarship and a recital 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12 in Bliss Recital Hall.

The program is free and open to the public.

Soprano Christina Aviles, a sophomore Music Education-Voice major from Dunkirk, N.Y., will receive the Amy Shields Memorial Scholarship. Shields, a Dana School of Music graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education as well as a Master’s Degree in Music Performance & Conducting, died unexpectedly in 2016. She was a member of the Sigma Alpha Iota fraternity and the Ohio Music Education Association.

The repertoire includes “Still Hurting” from The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown; Six Metamorphoses after Ovid (Op. 49) by Benjamin Britten; “Have You Seen But a White Lily Grow?; “Nachtviolen” by Franz Schubert; “Ich Liebe Dich” by Ludwig Van Beethoven; “Into the Night” by Clara Edwards; “Fantasia” by Bob Moore; “Senza Mamma” from Suor Angelica by Giacomo Puccini; “My Good Lord Done Been Here” arranged by Hall Johnson and “Go Forth” by Trevor Thomson.

Sigma Alpha Iota is an international music fraternity whose mission is to encourage, nurture and support the art of music, and to encourage women musicians of all ages, races, and nationalities. It strives to support successful and innovative educational programs in music for all stages of life and cultivates excellence in musical performance. It also dedicates financial resources that ensure the continuation of programs necessary to support the objectives of the fraternity in perpetuity. The Dana School of Music’s Sigma Alpha Iota chapter, Alpha Nu, was installed in 1930 and has been active since then.
