“’All Buttoned Up’ utilized pearl white buttons in designs on the black areas of penguin, and pearl white buttons covering the white areas of the penguin. The design is based on the early 1900’s clothing of the British fruit peddlers hawking wares from their wagons. To draw attention to themselves, they sewed pearl buttons to their dark suits in decorative designs. Many of us have pleasant associations with buttons, perhaps having played as a child with the treasures in a button box. The embellished penguin sculpture symbolizes city pride and the revitalization of Youngstown, a city calling attention to itself."
