The YSU Percussion Studio is a division of the renowned Dana School of Music and includes fifteen to twenty students in various undergraduate and graduate programs.
Our faculty and staff includes Dr. Glenn Schaft - director, Nathan Douds - adjunct faculty, adjunct drumline instructors, graduate assistants, SMARTS Drum Circle Facilitators, and a Dance Department accompanist.
Our mission is to foster a community of musician/scholars that respects cultural and musical versatility that develop a foundation of life-long learning concepts, musicianship skills, instrumental technique, repertoire, and technological literacy in performance and pedagogy. The success of our myriad alumni is a testament to this mission.
Students may individualize their degree curricula via specialization in orchestral percussion, drum set, jazz vibraphone, keyboard percussion, multiple percussion/contemporary chamber music, world percussion, composition, and marching percussion.
Our students participate in private and small group lessons, seminar class, guest artist clinics and masterclasses, perform with the Percussion Ensemble, Youngstown Percussion Collective and the SMARTS Drum Circle Program.
We are sponsored by Zildjian, Remo, ProMark, Black Swamp, and Dynasty.
