Glenn Schaft is Associate Professor and Director of Percussion Studies at Youngstown State University where he has served since 1996. He directs the YSU Percussion Ensemble, directs combos in the Jazz Studies Program, is the founder and coordinator of the SMARTS RHYTHMS Drum Circle Outreach Program, performs with the YSU Faculty Jazz Group, and is the co-founder of the Youngstown Percussion Collective - an “ensemble in residence” dedicated to performance and education. Recent performance highlights include a tour of Beijing, China with the YSU Faculty Jazz Quintet and a concert with the Youngstown Percussion Collective at the 2003 Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. Mr. Schaft earned three percussion performance degrees including the Doctor of Musical Arts from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, the Master of Arts from Eastern Illinois University, and the Bachelor of Music from the Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music. Additional studies include Afro-Cuban percussion at the Escuela Nacional de Arte in Havana, Cuba, the Berklee World Percussion Festival, Remo Health Rhythms drum circle workshop, contemporary American music at Cleveland State University, and orchestral percussion with members of the Cleveland Orchestra. Dr. Schaft endorses Zildjian Cymbals, GMS Drums, Remo Percussion, and ProMark sticks. 

 

The YSU Percussion Studies Program includes nearly 30 majors in various undergraduate and graduate education, performance, and jazz studies degree programs. The faculty and staff which teach and manage our program are known as the Youngstown Percussion Collective (YPC), a professional group “in residence” dedicated to percussion performance and teaching. YPC presents Public Concerts, K-12 School Presentations, Clinics, Masterclasses, Residencies, Private & Group Lessons, and Consulting Services. Founded in 2002, the YPC includes Glenn Schaft, Janet Pemberton - adjunct faculty, Ron Coulter - adjunct faculty, Justin Watt - graduate teaching assistant, Craig Hill - graduate assistant in bands/marching percussion, Patrick Wagner - graduate teaching assistant/facilitator for the SMARTS educational outreach drum circle program, David Hepler - graduate assistant in orchestra and percussion, and Nathan Douds - undergraduate teaching assistant/facilitator for the SMARTS drum circle program.
