Prospective Student Info - admissions & auditions

Once you consider our faculty, students, guest artists, alumni, curricular options, myriad performance, touring, and recording opportunities, facilities, instrument collection, the individual attention afforded each student, employment referrals, and the acclaimed reputation of our music school, you will discover that we provide an outstanding educational opportunity at one of the lowest costs of any comprehensive university in Ohio.

Application Process

1. Complete YSU application and financial aid forms at YSU homepage.

2. Schedule a Percussion Visitation Day with Dr. Schaft; ideally several months before your audition. We will answer your questions, offer a complimentary private lesson, discuss your career goals, degree options, and audition preparation, introduce students and faculty, observe lessons and rehearsals, and tour our facilities. Parents are welcome. The typical itinerary is 10 am - 3. pm. If you travel a long distance, we may include your audition, but if you are within a reasonable distance, we recommend the published audition dates. Campus tours are available through the Undergraduate Admissions office.

3. Schedule your audition - call the Dana School of Music office at 330.941.3636. If you require a date other than the Dana Audition Dates listed on the Studio Events Calendar, contact Dr. Schaft directly. Dr. Schaft offers private lessons for audition preparation.

4. Audition results. The Dana School of Music will send you a notification letter in early March.

5. Scholarship awards may include YSU Academic Awards and/or Dana School of Music Scholarships. Music Scholarship notifications are sent in late March or early April.

6. Upon acceptance, I will email you a Letter of Intent which must be completed and returned by May 1, indicating your attendance plans. Be sure I have your current e-mail and telephone number.

7. See advisement and registration.
