YSU Police Department

The YSU Police Department employs 22 full-time and 140 part-time commissioned officers with full police powers provided by the Ohio Revised Code. All our officers have graduated and are certified by Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy. In addition, these officers undergo periodic training to upgrade their skills. All are trained in emergency medical procedures, first aid, and CPR. YSU police officers are armed and trained annually in the use of firearms. On foot and in vehicles, they patrol the campus and residence halls 24 hours a day. Their efforts are coordinated with local law enforcement officials and the Ohio State Patrol and Ohio State Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification to enforce Ohio and local laws on campus, as well as University rules and regulations. and investigate crimes.  Routinely, the department reports criminal incidents to the appropriate police agency outside University jurisdiction to facilitate the needs of our University Community.

The YSU Police Department has a mutual aid agreement with the Youngstown City Police Department. This agreement provides for the officers of the YSU Police Department to exercise the same authority as the Youngstown City Police Department when engaged in police functions relating to the University on the near North Side providing for a safe and secure environment for the University Community.

Along with it's affiliation with the Youngstown Police Department, YSU Police also has several of its own officers serving as members of the Mahoning Valley Law Enforcement Task Force.
