  • The number of graduates hits a three-year high at spring commencement on May 17, with 1,869 students receiving their degrees. Maureen Midgely, GM-Lordstown plant manager, serves as speaker and receives an honorary doctor of science degree.

  • Janet E. DelBene, professor emeritus of chemistry, and Joseph F. Malmisur, former athletics director in intercollegiate athletics, are named 2003 Heritage Award recipients. The Heritage Award honors former faculty and staff who have made outstanding contributions to the university.

  • Tisha Hill takes the reigns as women’s basketball head coach after 20-year veteran coach Ed DiGregorio retires. A native of Cleveland Heights, Hill spent the last two seasons as the top assistant coach at Ball State.

  • Retired federal appeals court judge and 1951 YSU graduate Nathaniel R. Jones is honored at a reception at YSU’s McDonough Museum of Art following the ceremony naming the new federal courthouse in Youngstown after him. Jones is pictured with his wife Lillian and President David C. Sweet.
