2003: a year in review

Mr. and Mrs. David Sweet with Greg Moring
  • The new 17,767 square foot addition to Bliss Hall is dedicated. The $3.3 million new wing, which faces Smoky Hollow, has a foundry and state-of-the-art painting and sculpture studios. An exceptional feature of the addition is also unveiled – the gateways depicting the work and workers of the steel industry. Designed by associate professor of art, Greg Moring, the gateways offer a visual narrative of Youngstown’s rich steel heritage as well as the work that takes place in the new wing. College of Fine and Performing Arts Dean George McCloud says that the addition indicates that YSU is turning its face toward Smoky Hollow, not its back.

  • Esteemed Chinese artist, Feng Jianqin, has first USA retrospective at McDonough Museum of Arts, serving as the second Cliffe Visiting Artist.
  • YSU Freshman Readers Dialogue speaker, Benjamin Barber, a well-known terrorism expert, appears on campus.
  • The opening of the Hydraulics Research and Education Laboratory in Rayen College of Engineering and Technology is announced. Parker Hannifin, the world’s leading diversified manufacturer of motion and control technologies and systems, donates equipment to the laboratory, as well as commits to active participation in practical education of YSU students.
