Smoky Hollow 5k Run and 1 Mile Family Fun Walk (Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader)

A Green Race in Youngstown!

In an effort to minimize waste generated by certain events, the Smoky Hollow race has followed the 3 R's:  Reduce.  Reuse. Recycle!  Compostable cups and serviceware at all water stations and at the post-race party.  Recycled-content t-shirts for all participants and edible awards for the winners!  Informational tables and displays regarding personal sustainability at the "green" tent near the start/finish!

YSU Recycling will be composting all cups and serviceware recovered at the race.  In an effort to reduce waste, compostable cups and serviceware (sourced from organic waste products, not food crops) were chosen to reduce the consumption of natural resources commonly associated with bottled beverages and disposable cutlery and plates, particularly oil and natural gas, used in the production of plastics.  Water will be dispensed from reusable containers located at the start/finish and on the race course.

In an effort to support recycling, the Smoky Hollow Race Committee invested in recycled-content t-shirts, containing a blend of recycled-content polyester (made from plastic beverage containers) and recycled-content cotton.  By purchasing recycled-content products, recycling efforts are reinforced and supported as waste resources are recovered and used to make newer products.  Remember, when choosing recycled-content products, you are contributing to the creation of newer products made from the discarded waste resources that are collected at recycling centers and through recycling programs throughout the nation.
