Activities
At and Around the Take a stroll through the Festival grounds to see the many activities presented by our Youngstown State University and community partners. In addition, several organizations have their doors open for tours and visits. Make sure to check out this exciting part of the Summer Festival of the Arts.
The following groups have made a presence in our Tents Alive area on the west side of the Festival grounds.
SMARTS - Students Motivated by the Arts (www.fpa.ysu.edu/smarts) SMARTS is hosting the SMARTS Store, an Arts Shop for Kids with reasonably priced art available for children to purchase. Items include a variety of pictures, postcards, beads, jewelry, sports art, stationery and other small items. Many of these are created by local artists and/or SMARTS teachers, or created by children for SMARTS. SMARTS hopes to encourage and inspire children to have an early art appreciation even though they may only have a junior budget! Also, join in for the free SMARTS Rhythms drum circles both days at frequent intervals during the Festival.
WYSU (www.wysu.org) WYSU 88.5 FM on-air personalities, staff and volunteers will welcome Festival-goers to their tent both days. WYSU will transmit on-air programming into their tent via radio tuner/speaker and will distribute give-aways and promotional materials.
Mahoning Valley Historical Society at the Festival (www.mahoninghistory.org) Come to the MVHS booth both days where you can go back to the days of the Pioneers, with artifacts from the traveling suitcase, games and dress up. Sepia toned photographs of those willing to dress up in pioneer clothing will be available on site for a nominal fee. Museum staff and volunteers will be distributing giveaways and coupons for a free activity book if they visit the museum.
Children’s Museum of the Valley (www.valleykids.org) Join the Children's Museum of the Valley both days to create unique multicultural instruments. This activity will encourage children to recognize that music is universal as they craft a variety of instruments including Maracas, African drums, Native American dance arm bands, finger cymbals, and rain sticks.
Center for Working Class Studies (www.as.ysu.edu/~cwcs) Four of YSU’s
many published authors will be available for book sales and
signings.
Community Theaters of the Valley (cc.ysu.edu/~tacopela/VictorianPlayers/index.htm) (www.oaklandcenter.com) (www.theyoungstownplayhouse.com) The Valley is rich in community theater talent, boasting numerous venues to get your theater “fix”. Make your way over to the booth where members of Victorian Players, the Oakland Center for the Arts and the Youngstown Playhouse will be available both days for you to learn more about their upcoming seasons. Live music, vignettes and show tunes are but a few of the surprises you’ll find there.
Youngstown Symphony Guild (www.youngstownsymphony.com/guild.htm) This support group of the Youngstown Symphony will have several musical-themed quilts available for patrons to purchase raffle tickets for a drawing to be held at their upcoming homes tour. In addition, literature, membership information and Youngstown Symphony concert schedules will be available.
Wick Neighbors, Inc. (www.wickneighbors.org) Connecting people, place and community, Wick Neighbors, Inc. will illustrate their plans for building a creative neighborhood in the Wick District-Smoky Hollow Development. Stop by Saturday from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. to meet their volunteers and staff and get the results of the annual Smoky Hollow 5K Run held earlier in the day.
Children’s Hands-On Art Tent If glue, paint, beads and other craft supplies appeal to your child then this is the place for you. Under the direction of local art teacher Heidi Swift, the C.H.O.A.T. has become an outstanding way to spend some time at the Festival with the end result being a wonderful take-home art project. All projects are free as long as the supplies last both days.
These groups have programs either throughout the festival grounds or at their adjacent sites.
Youngstown Opera Guild (www.youngstownoperaguild.org) Shhh..it’s the Opera Guild’s Silent Auction where one-of-a kind works of art donated by artists of the Summer Festival and other community artists will be up for auction both days. Bidding will commence Saturday at 10:00 a.m. and end Sunday at 4:00 p.m. The Silent Auction is located under the eaves of Kilcawley Center outside. The YOG annual meeting will be held Sunday at 1:30 p.m. in Kilcawley Center’s Chestnut Room followed by a performance by the recipients of the YOG scholarships.
Mahoning Valley Historical Society at the Arms Museum (www.mahoninghistory.org) Just up Wick Avenue, the Arms Museum will offer a free open house on Saturday, July 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 5pm during the festival. They'll be open regular hours on Sunday, 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. and offer BOGO admission.
Partners for Workplace Diversity (www.ysu.edu/diversity) Partners for Workplace Diversity is a cooperative effort among organizations in the Valley to develop responses to diversity issues in area workplaces. Their booth, located in the Festival of Nations area, will provide information on diversity issues.
Young Audiences of Northeastern Ohio (www.yaneo.org ) The country’s oldest and largest nonprofit arts-in-education organization, YANEO is dedicated to making the arts essential to the education of all school-aged children. If you are an educator, PTO/PTA member, parent or just interested in children and the arts, stop over to their tent located by the McDonough Museum both days as their representative artist, Augusto Bordelois, creates a professional piece of chalk art.
Maag Library (www.maag.ysu.edu ) Don’t miss Maag’s famous Book Sale Saturday, July 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Sunday, July 13 from 12:00 -5:00 p.m. outdoors near the front doors of the Library. The Library will also be open during its regular hours.
McDonough Museum (http://mcdonoughmuseum.ysu.edu/ ) Check the performance schedule out for live performances in and around the McDonough and stop by to catch these exhibits both days as part of their Summer Celebration up until July 27. Christian Wulffen: How to Improve Your English; Jim Lucas: Recent Works; Georgia Tambasis: Trans-Mutations.
Chalk on the Block is also the place to brush up on your chalk drawing skills at the McDonough where chalk will be available to create the kind of art you can’t take home! Professional chalk artist Augusto Bordelois (www.augustofineart.com ) will be chalking a 12-foot by 12-foot mural on the driveway of the McDonough both days. He is available to offer tips about getting the best out of your chalking.
Youngstown Film (www.youngstownfilm.com ) On Friday, July 11 at 7:00 p.m. the newly formed Youngstown Film will screen the classic movie To Kill A Mockingbird in McKay auditorium, Beeghly Hall on Rayen Avenue. Check the website for more information.
Clarence R. Smith Mineral Museum (http://clarence-smith-museum.ysu.edu/smitty.htm) The Clarence R. Smith Mineral Museum will be open from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and is located in the atrium of Moser Hall (Engineering Science Building). Stop by to see the extensive geological specimens on display
Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center (www.ysu.edu/reccenter) If you haven’t seen the 53-foot tall rock climbing wall yet you need to stop by the Rec Center on Saturday from 10:00 – 2:00 p.m. for tours of the facility. This state-of-the-art Center is all about becoming and staying healthy.
Butler Institute of American Art (www.butlerart.com) Now is your chance to see the Norman Rockwell original, Lincoln the Railsplitter as well as these exhibits Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m., Electros: Technology & Art Rituals; Kenneth Noland: Works on Paper; The Secret Lives of Frames: From the Lowy Collection. Family activities will occur Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. and Sunday 12:00 to 3:30 p.m.
St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Summerfest, Walnut Street Thursday through Sunday July 5 - 8 from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., St. Nicholas will be serving up delicious Greek food, music and culture. Take the short walk or drive south two block from the Festival for some Grecian delights!
Green Team~Mahoning County Division of Recycling (www.greenteam.cc) The Green Team will help children create a recycled craft project near the C.H.O.A.T. on Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 12:00 noon to 4:00 p.m. They’ll be making YSU penguins from used film canisters and will have Green Team promotional materials to hand out.
YSU re:CREATE (www.ysu.edu/recycle/recreate.htm) Located adjacent to the Children’s Hands-On Art Tent, this year’s canvas will be recycled doors. Kids will have the chance to paint and repaint old doors salvaged through the re:CREATE program both Saturday and Sunday.
Ward Beecher Planetarium (http://www.cc.ysu.edu/physics-astro/) and Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society (www.mvobservatory.com) See the program schedule for scheduled shows at the Planetarium both days. Planetarium staff will be doing various “space crafts” (cute huh!?) near the west doors of Ward Beecher Hall by the Artists’ Marketplace. In addition members of the Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society will have their powerful telescopes available near the McDonough Museum of Art for ongoing sessions of safe sun viewing both days.
The Churches of Wick Avenue On Sunday, July 13, at 10:00 a.m. the Wick Avenue churches welcome Summer Festival patrons to worship with them at a community service at New Beginnings Outreach Ministry, 322 Wick Avenue. The Wick Avenue Churches include New Beginnings Outreach Ministry; Butler Presbyterian; First Presbyterian; Ursuline High School and St. John’s Episcopal. This year’s service will be led by Pastor Melvin Trent from New Beginnings Outreach Ministry, Nick Mager, First Presbyterian Church, John Horner, St. John’s and Ted Grissett of Butler Presbyterian and by Roman Catholic Bishop George V. Murry. An outdoor reception will follow the service, across the street, on the lawn of St. John’s.
St. John’s Episcopal Church (www.stjohnohio.org) On Friday, July 11 & Saturday, July 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., a rummage sale and church tours will be held on the grounds of St. John’s Episcopal Church, 323 Wick Avenue. Also on Saturday, vote for and buy your favorite cookies, baked by the St. John’s bakers celebrating the 100th year of the Hershey Chocolate Company.
Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County at Main Library (www.libraryvisit.org) Get a Clue @ Your Library: Summer Fun Fest Saturday, July 12 from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m Performers, games, prizes, surprises, tattoos and more! No reservations needed. A live Clue Game for teens (grades 7-12) will be held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Was it Colonel Mustard with a candlestick in the library or Miss Scarlet with a rope in the conservatory? Teens can solve this classic mystery as characters come to life. Library open regular hours.
Bliss Hall (www.fpa.ysu.edu) Children’s artwork will be exhibited in the Bliss Hall Gallery both days as a part of the Tri-County Youth Art Expo. Here in Youngstown, a 24-foot mural depicting the history of Youngstown from when John Young first settled here to recent history, will be unveiled Saturday, July 12 at 12:00 noon in the Bliss Hall Gallery. The mural will be available both days. Stop by to see how much you know about Youngstown history!
Youngstown Historical Center (Steel Museum) Wood Street (www.ohiohistory.org/places/youngst/) On Saturday from 3:15 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. the Youngstown Historical Center will host a free Introduction to Genealogy Resources. The Center will be open Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday, Noon to 5:00 p.m. |
