President’s Report

-          Welcome new Representatives!

-          Homecoming Week 2013: Caroline has more information on this week’s events.

  • THANK YOU to all who went to the SGA Coffee Event!

-          Meeting with the Deans

  • Michael and I successfully met with each of the Deans. More information in his report.

-          Academic Building Bulletin Boards

  • In the process of getting a bulletin board, showcase, power point slide up in all of the academic buildings. (One per college, at least)

-          Ohio Student Government Association Initiative

  • This is an initiative to support the House Bill 111, which would permit Boards of Trustees across the state to decide for their selves whether or not student trustees would be able to vote on matters before the board. [See letter for more information]

-          Dr. Dunn Installation Ceremony: Friday, November 1st at 1:00pm in Beeghly Center.

 

Executive Vice President’s Report

-          Last Lecture Series

  • Sent out another email with survey
  • Will compile times and send out an email verifying availability

-          Academic Senate Meeting

  • Faculty thought that a big issue was moving to D2 for sports
    • Dr. Dunn didn’t feel that there was support for this and said that it wouldn’t actually save that much money.
    • Classes being cut was up to department chairs- they should know best

-          Academic Standards Committee Meeting

  • Excused absence policy
    • Currently writing this
    • Some examples of what will be considered good reasons
    • Teachers won’t be able to penalize you
    • Still student’s responsibility to make up work
    • Alternate assignment must be given
    • Not meant to be a fix all- just a way to alleviate most of the problems
    • Textbook royalties
      • Postponed to next meeting
    • Semester scheduling guidelines
      • Used so that classes aren’t scheduled on top of each other
      • Not much that can be changed
      • Changing it to reflect full time’s contract saying that they can’t have class during the time that their union meetings usually are
      • Really just have to get the word out about the guidelines and make sure that they’re being enforced

  • Interested in getting any feedback about the application process and ideas on how to market the Graduate Program better

  • Why do students need to reenroll after doing college in high school and then apply to YSU? They were already YSU students- needs efficiency
  • High school guidance counselors aren’t on board with YSU
  • Need more full time faculty to keep up with growing programs
  • Feels YSU needs rebranded
  • Get more students into short term or long term study abroad options
  • Try to emphasize the importance of students getting involved in organizations
  • Smoking around campus is an issue
  • Chartwells prices are too high for events catering
  • Need to talk to parents so they realize that something needs to change- even is students are living at home they need more independence once they’re in college- something needs to change once they start college

Making Appropriations for nine organization(s)

Be it enacted by the Legislative Assembly of the Youngstown State University Student Government Association assembled, That the following sums are appropriated, out of any money in the Appropriations Fund not otherwise appropriated, for the fiscal year ending June 30, 2014, for the activities of student organizations, namely:

 

Section 1: Iota Phi Theta is appropriated the sum of $125.00 to cover the cost of the general and community service registration fees for Fall Regionals which will be October 31st through November 2nd, 2013. This event will be held in Columbus, Ohio. Five (5) members are expected to attend.

 

Section 2: Men’s Golf Club is appropriated the sum of $800.00 to defray the cost of the tournament fee for the Atlantic Region Tournament 2 which will be October 26th and 27th, 2013. This event will be held in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. Eight (8) members are expected to attend.

 

Section 3: Youngstown State University Student Chapter of American Dental Hygienists Association is appropriated the sum of $300.00 to cover the cost of lodging and table clinic brochures for the Ohio Dental Hygienists’ Association Annual Session which will be November 1st through 3rd, 2013. This event will be held in Newark, Ohio. Twenty-four (24) members are expected to attend.

 

Section 4: Student Nonprofit Leadership Organization is appropriated the sum of $400.00 to cover the cost of hotel fees for the Center for Nonprofit Leadership Regional Case Study which will be October 26th, 2013. This event will be held in Cleveland, Ohio. Fifteen (15) members are expected to attend.

 

Section 5: Student Nonprofit Leadership Organization is appropriated the sum of $200.00 to cover the cost of catering for the Nonprofit Leadership Recruitment Mixer which will be October 29th, 2013. This event will be held in the Williamson College of Business. Twenty to thirty-five (20-35) people are expected to attend.

 

Section 6: Alpha Phi Delta is appropriated the sum of $1,000.00 to defray the cost of the registration fee for the Centennial Gala which will be April 4th through 6th, 2014. This event will be held in Washington, D.C. Four to six (4-6) members are expected to attend.

 

Section 7: International Students Association is appropriated the sum of $650.00 to cover the cost of security, food, decorations, and sound for the Fall International Students Formal which will be November 23rd, 2013. This event will be held in the DeBartolo Stadium Club. Three hundred (300) people are expected to attend.

 

Section 8: Interfraternity Council is appropriated the sum of $1,500.00 to defray the cost of registration and hotel fees for the American Fraternal Leadership Values Conference which will be February 6th through 9th, 2014. This event will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Five (5) members are expected to attend.

 

Section 9: Men’s Club Volleyball is appropriated the sum of $150.00 to cover the cost of the tournament entry fee for the Kent State Club Volleyball Tournament which will be November 2nd, 2013. This event will be held at Kent State University. All team members (8-10) are expected to attend.

 

Section 10: Dana Guitar Association is appropriated the sum of $1,000.00 to cover the cost of the recital and master class fee for the Guest Artist Recital and Masterclass: Dr. Andrew Zohn which will be April 8th, 2014. Letter to SGA:

“The food service this year seems to be a step up in quality from last year. However, in Christman, we are not able to choose what we do or do not want. I see many people throwing away the things that they were forced to take as a meal. It is extremely difficult to eat healthy when you can only receive vegetables when you also take a serving of pasta or potatoes with it. What I would like to see is for students to be able to make the decision of what to put on their plate, and what to leave for others, rather than waste the items that came with that option. Thank you for considering this potential for improvement.”

What fundraising efforts has your organization recently put forth? What is being planned?: Our organization conducts about four toothbrush sales per semester, where we sell toothbrushes on campus at the low and affordable cost of one dollar. We currently have four sales already scheduled in both Kilcawley Center and Cushwa for this current semester. We also had a fundraiser in Spring 2013 where we sold bags made of 100% recyclable material earning 50% of the profit. We plan on having another sale within the next few weeks to help defray the costs of upcoming events and expenses. Lastly, we are in the process of setting up a sale for Oral-B power tooth brushes and Oral-B whitening strips. We have been in steady contact with our University’s Oral-B representative reviewing acceptable profit goals and prices. We plan to engage this sale within the next month or so.

What community service has your organization participated in recently? What is being planned? Please be specific as to how many participate and if it is done on behalf of the organization.: As the YSU Student Chapter of ADHA we take great pride in our community service efforts. Annually, we have participated in selling toothbrushes at the low cost of one dollar on campus, baking Christmas cookies at the Newman Center for Battered Women and Children, fulfilled the wishes of four children in last year’s campus Giving Tree, volunteered to help with the set up of the Heart Walk held on campus, put-together dental hygiene care packages for soldiers away at war in conjunction with Sisters for Soliders. In the near future, we also plan on distributing toothbrushes and tooth paste to underpriveleged children in the Youngstown City School District and to the Harambee Youth Coalition.

Name of Event: Ohio Dental Hygienists’ Association Annual Session

Date of Event: November 1-3, 2013

Description of Event: YSU dental hygiene students who are members of the YSU Student Chapter of the ADHA will be attending the Ohio Dental Hygienists’s Associations’ Annual Session in Newark, Ohio. It will be held at Cherry Valley Lodge on November 1-3, 2013. Two students (the President and Vice President) will be delegates while two additional students (Secretary and Treasurer) will serve as alternate delegates. All delegates will be representatives of Youngstown State University at the session. Twenty-four students will be presenting table clinics to practicing hygienists and students in the state of Ohio.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: Youngstown State University will be represented at this important, professional, state event by the university’s dental hygiene students. The delegates will be participating in the House of Delegates where each Ohio dental hygiene school is represented along with each component in the state. By participating, students will learn what takes places at the annual session event and are given the opportunity to provide input regarding important state matters that effect the profession of dental hygiene. These students are also able to showcase their professional knowledge gained at YSU by presenting their research in the form of table clinics.

Description of Event: We are conducting a Regional Case Study with the Catholic Diocese of Cleveland. During the duration of the event we will analysis a current situation/ event, participate in team building activites/projects, work with individuals who have been in this respected field for years, learn about procedures and policies of nonprofit, and conduct research on topics provided.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: This will benefit YSU and the student body by gaining exposure to our campus in a different setting, showcasing what we have learned as students and networking.

Name of Event: Nonprofit Leadership Recruitment Mixer

Date of Event: October 29, 2013

Description of Event: The Student Nonprofit Recruitment Mixer is a great way to recruit new and current students on campus. Our plans will be to invite students, community business professionals, current YSU Students, past students, faculty and staff to this event. This mixer will open up the opportunity to learn more about our organization in a fun setting environment. During the day of the event, current SNLO students will greet individuals, food and drinks (non-alcoholic) will be provided and plenty of networking opportunities will be available. A brief presentation will be given by past students and nonprofit community leaders about their experience in the nonprofit world, the outcomes they had to face in their career and receive more knowledge about the nonprofit minor. Most students are unfamiliar and unaware about nonprofits; our goal is to give them an idea about this field and to let them know that this minor is open to anyone wishing to pursue it.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: The Nonprofit Leadership Recruitment Mixer will be very beneficial to YSU and the student body. This mixer allows community leaders the opportunity to interact with campus, reach out to the current and future student and faculty. Our hopes’ is to show the community what Youngstown State University has to offer and how our University provides a broad range of opportunities.

Description of Event: International student formal is an event held twice a year, fall and spring for YSU international students. It is open to all YSU students. Food and Non-alcoholic drinks are served, there is music and dance, fashion show and raffles are also held. It is generally formal events which is attended by CISP Officers, professors and some invited guests.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: International Students formal has become a platform where student from different cultures meet and share ideas, know other cultures and most importantly it serves a way to exhibit the american experience.

What fundraising efforts has your organization recently put forth? What is being planned?: Currently, we have been selling t-shirts to raise money and plan on continuing this effort. We have also been doing small events like raffles and restaurant take overs.

What community service has your organization participated in recently? What is being planned? Please be specific as to how many participate and if it is done on behalf of the organization.: The Interfraternity Council is made up of five member chapters and our members participate in their chapter events. Events that our member participate in include Derby Days, Rock-Til-Dawn, and Y-Town Beat Down.

Our council has recently adopted a philanthropic cause separate from our member chapters. We now support the New Lease on Life Animal Shelter and are working on planning events for the end of the Fall semester and through out the Spring semester to benefit and support the shelter.

Name of Event: American Fraternal Leadership Values Conference

Date of Event: February 6 – February 9, 2014

Description of Event: The AFLV conference brings together several thousand fraternity and sorority members from across the country to collaborate on leadership techniques. Speakers and presenters lead sessions on marketing, recruiting, member education, values education, relationship skills, and various leadership techniques. Members who attend the conference are able to network with other fraternity members from across the country along with delegates and leaders from other national organizations.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: Through attending this conference, the men associated with the Interfraternity Council will have the opportunity to attend two days worth of sessions with topics ranging from leadership development, member education, and risk management. The participants will then be able to take new skills and techniques developed at the conference and improve the quality of membership for all students currently involved in the Interfraternity Council. Our members will be able to take their improved leadership skills developed from the conference to other campus organizations in which they participate, further increasing the development of other campus leaders not directly affiliated with our membership.

Please be specific as to how many participate and if it is done on behalf of the organization.: As a team we have played against a local high school team to help them practice. We do not setup community service as a group, but individually we are involved in local churches, food banks, Little League Baseball, and high school athletics.

What fundraising efforts has your organization recently put forth? What is being planned?: Recently put forth:

-We have received funds from two local businesses who have generously supported our organization.

Being planned:

-We have bake sales every semester. -We are planning to raise money through a guitar raffle.

What community service has your organization participated in recently? What is being planned? Please be specific as to how many participate and if it is done on behalf of the organization.: Participated in recently:

-Last semester we gave free recitals in venues such as schools, and retirement facilities and nursing homes (i.e. Shepherd of the Valley Assisted Living, Poland, and Park Vista Assisted Living, Fifth Avenue, Youngstown).

What is being planned? -Our members are planning to play many free concerts and give presentations in local high schools and middle schools, and nursing homes.

-We work to bring in guest artists to the YSU campus. It is part of the DGA’s mission to promote the arts in the greater Youngstown area. Several recent concerts include guest artist recitals by Thomas Viloteau (France), Vladimir Gorbach (Russia), Joe Negri (USA). All of these concerts were free and open to the public.

Name of Event: Guest Artist Recital and Masterclass: Dr. Andrew Zohn (Internationally acclaimed guitarist and pedagogue).

Date of Event: April 8, 2014

Location: Bliss Recital Hall, Dana School of Music, YSU

Description of Event: International prize-winning classical guitarist, recording artist, composer and educator Dr. Andrew Zohn will be giving a recital at YSU. He will also be conducting a master-class for YSU students. The concert and master-class are free and open to all YSU students, faculty, and staff, as well as the general public.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: Bringing a world-class artist to campus will expose YSU students to music they might not have heard before, performed at a high level of musicianship and virtuosity. His concert will feature music from around the world and will enrich YSU students’ cultural awareness. Concerts like these are a vital part of the performing arts community in the greater Youngstown area.

YSU guitar students will also have the rare opportunity to play for Dr. Zohn in a master-class setting. Such classes are excellent educational opportunities for YSU students, and are also free and open to the public.
