This past semester the UAC was able to make great strides in making the campus website and email system more user friendly. At several points, our concerns were relayed to the university administration during their overhaul of the site and email system. Furthermore, we were able to compile a list of area discounts offered to students and have posted this list on the SGA website. Providing this information to the student body is a great way to ensure that students are getting the most out of their YSU benefits.

Organization Name: Sigma Alpha Epsilon

Total Number of Members: 35

Contact Person: Matthew Swerdan
Contact Phone Number: (330) 5507557
Contact Email: mgswerdan@gmail.com

Advisor: John Young
Advisor’s Phone Number: (330)941-7438
Advisor’s Email: jlyoung02@ysu.edu

What fundraising efforts has your organization recently put forth? What is being planned?: The brothers of the Ohio Alpha of Sigma Alpha Epsilon play a large role in helping the community by participating in philanthropy projects. With this, every brother donates time to charity. Some of the recent philanthropy projects of Ohio Alpha include raising funds for Children’s Miracle Network and a letter writing campaign to raise funds for St. Jude’s hospital. Most recently we are planning a video game marathon in which all proceeds will benefit Akron Children’s Hospital, and our chapter is forming a team for a local autism awareness walk to raise funds for research. Brother of the Ohio Alpha chapter are also extending the offer to other organizations in the area to form teams for this worthy cause. Last spring, the Ohio Alpha chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon were selected to receive the community service award.

What community service has your organization participated in recently? What is being planned? Please be specific as to how many participate and if it is done on behalf of the organization.: As previously stated, the brothers or Sigma Alpha Epsilon donate their time and effort to giving back to the community. The past two winters we have participated in a Christmas Tree Lighting for local hospitals, adopted and maintained a stretch of a local highway, donated our time to other organization’s fundraisers, habitat for humanity, and angels for animals. Most of these efforts have and will be maintained for years to come.

Name of Event: Association for Behavior Analysis International 38th Annual Convention
Date of Event: May 25-29, 2012
Location: Seattle, Washington
Expected Participation: 1
Total Cost of Event: 1,786

Description of Event: The Association for Behavior Analysis, International will be holding its 38th annual convention in Seattle, WA. This convention is an opportunity for all individuals interested in the field of behavior analysis to learn about the most current research being conducted across the nation (and internationally). This year, it is anticipated that there will be over 1,600 presentations. This is an opportunity for students, faculty, researchers, and practitioners to learn and share information about the science, practice, education, and professional issues facing the field of behavior analysis. The convention takes place over 4 and a half days, with numerous presentations occurring simultaneously. There are also a number of invited presentations from some of the more well-known behavior analyst in the field.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: I am a graduate student in the department of Psychology (2nd year student in the masters program in Applied Behavior Analysis), and will be the presenting author for a poster at this conference. This poster is for a research project on which I have collaborated with a YSU faculty member which evaluates the effectiveness of a relatively new teaching method known as interteaching. Interteaching research display many advantages over traditional lecture. The more knowledge educators have on this method of teaching the better they can serve their students. I will also be the Chair for a research symposium on a similar topic. Attendance at this event by students in the masters program here at YSU will provide an opportunity to represent the program and the University. This may potentially serve as a recruitment strategy for potential new applicants. In addition, there are immediate direct benefits for myself as a graduate student. Attending and presenting at this conference will provide an opportunity to interact with behavior analysts outside of the University, and provide a learning opportunity that cannot be matched elsewhere.

What fundraising efforts has your organization recently put forth? What is being planned?: Last semester SAAS had a movie night in which we asked students to bring canned goods or a monetary donation for admission. We also had a game night in conjunction with a toy/clothing drive. We donated all canned goods, toys, and clothes to the Mahoning Valley Rescue Mission.

Early last year we took part in Relay for Life and this year we would like to participate again and use some of the funds we raise throughout the year to go toward that event.

What community service has your organization participated in recently? What is being planned? Please be specific as to how many participate and if it is done on behalf of the organization.:
Two of the members have participated as mentors through the Goodwill Good guides Program. Regrettably the program just ended due to lack of funding but we still try to keep in contact with the young adults we mentored. As an organization we plan to hold more clothing/food drives and do some volunteer work such as park clean ups and helping out at soup kitchens.

Name of Event: Miss Curvaceous Pageant
Date of Event: April 6, 2012
Location: Chestnut Room Kilcawley Center
Expected Participation: 100-150
Total Cost of Event: 500

Description of Event: Most people have seen or heard of state or national pageants with gorgeous contestants but some believe those selected women are the only definition of beauty, SAAS wanted to broaden peoples views by having a pageant geared towards full-figured women. The event will be structured in the way of a pageant with several categories and a Q&A segment and judges etc. The event will be $3 with YSU ID and $5 without. We plan to start the show around 6:30, have an intermission with refreshments for guests and crown a winner at the end of the night.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: We believe the event will not only be a new and fun experience to students but it will also help bring awareness to the fact that society may only accept certain body types as beautiful but we as individuals can embrace those of all shapes and sizes. We believe this event will build esteem and reach out to those who may need help boosting their confidence and accepting their own differences as well as others.

Name of Event: National Student Nurses Association
Date of Event: April 11-15
Location: Pittsburgh PA
Expected Participation: 4 members
Total Cost of Event: $755.00

Description of Event: Exceptional speakers, exciting topics and extraordinary networking opportunities.
National, state and school leaders come together to further develop their leadership prowess in governing
the affairs of NSNA. The past will meet the future as NSNA alumni mingle with current NSNA leaders—a great
opportunity to meet mentors and connect with colleagues. Also numerous classes to attend about resume building, NCLEX review courses for licensure. To be able to sit in the house of delegates and be apart of the new bills that become apart of the by laws for future student nurses.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: This will benefit the student by learning how the process of the house of delegates works and also how these bills become part of the by laws which will affect all student nurses. One of the most important is the BSN in 10 which requires all nurses to have a bachelors degree in order to continue in nursing. It is a great learning experience. NCLEX review to help prepare for the state exam which will also benefit our students as we prepare. To bring back all of this knowledge will be invaluable to YSU.

What fundraising efforts has your organization recently put forth? What is being planned?: Currently we are planning to sell T-shirts to both our organizations members, and other students in STEM. Additionally, we are planning to sell shot glasses to members of STEM with some sort of comical math/engineering design. Lastly, we are going to try to sell chocolate bars as they seem to be very popular and an easy way to do fundraising. Hopefully we can raise over 300$ with these three fundraisers to be able to operate next year.

What community service has your organization participated in recently? What is being planned? Please be specific as to how many participate and if it is done on behalf of the organization.: We frequently demonstrate different projects our Electrical and Computer Engineering Department has to local schools and STEM events. It’s not traditional ”Community Service,” but I feel as though it is service because we volunteer our time and labor to show what Engineering is to kids and what YSU can do.

Name of Event: Student Professional Activities Conference
Date of Event: April 3rd, 2012
Location: McKay Auditorium
Expected Participation: 35-45 People
Total Cost of Event: 593.25-762.75 USD (Depends on the attendance)

Description of Event: Our student IEEE chapter each year hosts a Student Professional Activities Conference, SPAC, in the Spring. The event is aimed at providing students enrolled in not only Electrical and Computer Engineering, but any Engineering or STEM related discipline with knowledge and information about subjects that are not taught in classrooms. Each year we bring in two national speakers through IEEE, the professional organization, to come to Youngstown State University to give a talk on various subjects. This year we have Joe DeSalvo, who will be speaking about Engineering ethics, and Guru Madhavan, with a talk on being a Holistic Engineer. The event is a formal banquet held in the evening with a Build Your Own Buffet, B.Y.O.B., dinner by Sodexo food services. This event has received regional recognition from IEEE by our continuing support with hosting this conference every year. YSU students, professors, and Local IEEE Chapter members attend the event which makes for a great professional environment.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: This event will benefit YSU and the student body by bringing in two national speakers to give presentations on topics that are not typically seen in courses. Students will enjoy a formal professional environment with the speakers, a nice dinner, as well as time to do networking. IEEE, if you do not know, is the largest professional organization in the world. IEEE has International, National, Regional, Local, and Student Chapters. By hosting an SPAC, we are getting YSU’s name out there by being a highly active IEEE Student Chapter to all of the different levels. It connects us with our Local Youngstown IEEE Chapter by bringing in local Engineers in Industry to enjoy a dinner, presentation, and networking opportunity with YSU Students.

Description of Event: We are having our induction ceremony on March 30, 2012. We have been unable to have a formal induction ceremony due to apathetic leadership and low funds in the past. It is costly, but primarily because of the price associated with having food provided by Sodexo. Our keynote speakers will be Teresa Weakley, Dr. Cynthia Anderson and Christine Davidson. Anderson and Davidson are members of the campus community.

In addition to membership, we are inviting english department and adjunct journalism faculty, many of which are prominent members of the local media.

How will this event benefit YSU and the student body?: Weakly will provide a modern-day journalist prospective on what it’s like in the fast-paced media enterprise. Dr. Anderson values the journalism department due to her father’s work at the Vindicator, and expressed her support for the field by way of a $100,000 donation to the Journalism department. She will undoubtedly have great, interesting things to say. Christine Davidson was a member of the first CNN broadcast team. Now an employee at the NewsOutlet.org on campus, Davidson helps students hone their craft, particularly in radio news pieces. Davidson will give a rare look into the startup that grew into one of the largest media enterprises in the world.
