YSU Tops Horizon League with 18 Academic All-League Selections
    Indianapolis, Ind. -- Of the 86 student-athletes honored from eight sports, Youngstown State University led all Horizon League institutions with 18 selections to the league's Spring Academic All-League Teams, the Horizon League announced on Wednesday.
     The men's and women's track and field teams each landed five student athletes on the squad while four baseball student-athletes were recognized. Women's and men's tennis and women's and men's golf each received one student-athlete on the academic all-league teams.
      First-Team CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America selection Jarrod Davis from the men's track and field team and Second-Team CoSIDA/
ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America choice Brandon Caipen of the Penguins baseball program highlight the YSU honorees. Davis, who captured the javelin and hammer throw titles to capture Field Performer of the Year, owns a 4.0 grade-point average in computer information systems, while Caipen, a 28th-round draft choice of the Houston Astros, owns a 3.82 grade-point average in integrated social studies.
      Other student-athletes named to the Spring Academic All-League teams include Bethany Anderson (women's track, 3.44 - health), Brian Boone (baseball, 3.61 - exercise science), Emily Cicero (women's track, 3.83 - food and nutrition), Lindsay Hill (women's track, 3.55 - early childhood education), Dave Mealy (men's track, 3.57 - integrated social studies), Brian Meek (men's tennis, 3.53 - mechanical engineering), Josh Page (baseball, 3.90 - middle childhood education), Gina Peretti (women's tennis, 3.89 - political science), Ryan Sellman (baseball, 3.68 - integrated social studies), John Sheppard (men's track, 3.59 - exercise science), Bonnie Sherman (women's golf, 3.89 - accounting), Nick Smith (men's track, 3.49 - geology), Drew Weizer (men's track, 3.76 - physical education), Katy Williams (women's track, 3.75 - French), Carly Youlton (women's track, 3.65 - exercise science) and Josh Zarlenga (men's golf, 3.85 - accounting).
