Penguins Shut Out Twice in Doubleheader Sweep at
Butler
Indianapolis, Ind. -- The Youngstown State baseball
team failed to score a run against
Butler on Sunday afternoon as the
Bulldogs swept a doubleheader from
the Penguins by identical 2-0 scores
at Bulldog Park.
Youngstown State (12-19 overall and 6-6 in the Horizon
League) had just six hits in 14
innings against Butler (25-17 and
7-8) starters Aaron Phillips and
John Corcoran. The Penguins had
strong pitching performances from
senior Matt Brumit and Corey Ohalek,
but could not capitalize.
In game one, the Penguins managed just two hits against
Phillips (5-4). Jim Lipinski had a
single in the second inning and
Kendall Schlabach singled in the
fourth for YSU's two hits. Against
Brumit, who pitched his second
consecutive complete game, the
Bulldogs scored a run in the first
and a run in the third. Brumit (2-4)
allowed just seven hits and one
earned run while walking two and
striking out five.
In game two, the scenario was similar to the first game with
YSU picking up just four hits off
Corcoran (10-1), who tied the school
record for victories in a season
with the win. Schlabach, Kyle
Penrod, Matt Speas and James
Swearengen had singles for the
Guins. The Bulldogs scored once in
the first and added another run in
the fifth for the 2-0 seven-inning
victory.
The Penguins begin a busy week on Monday night when they play
host to Akron at Cafaro Field at 7.
YSU plays host to Kent State on
Tuesday night before traveling to
Ohio State on Wednesday and plays
league-foe Wright State next
weekend. |
