Niagara Scores 10 Unanswered Runs in 11-4 Win
Niles, Ohio -- The
Niagara Purple Eagles (5-8) spoiled
a 4-1 Youngstown State (3-9) lead by
scoring the final 10 runs including
a four run sixth to defeat YSU in
its home opener, 11-4, on Thursday
afternoon at Cafaro Field.
Niagara's Jeffery Vincent and Josh McCurdy went 2-for-4 with
two RBIs and each hit solo home runs
in the eighth. Kyle Nicoletta
picked up the win for Niagara,
scattering three hits and striking
out three in five innings. Jim
Lipinski led the Penguins with two
hits and two RBIs.
The Penguin offense got off to an early start opened up 2-0
lead in the first inning. Ty
Furino led off with an infield
single and Kendall Schlabach reached
on an error to put runners on first
and second. After a passed
ball, Lipinski stepped up and ripped
a two-run single to left field for
the first scores of the game.
Niagara cut the lead to one in the top of the second when
Vincent drew a lead-off walk and
eventually scored on a sacrifice fly
by McCurdy.
However, YSU tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the
second. After Jim Phillips and
Charles Schultz drew walks, J.D.
Hannan hit a two-run single down the
right field line to give the
Penguins a 4-1 lead through two
innings.
Nicolletta and Ryan Pranger held the Penguins scoreless for
the final seven innings and Niagara
scored two runs in the third, one in
each the fourth and fifth, four in
the sixth and two in the eight to
pick up the 11-4 run.
Chris Dennis got the start and gave up four runs in three
innings. Mike Hosterman
surrendered one run in two innings
to pick up the loss.
YSU continues its season Saturday with a double header
against Akron and Valparaiso at
Cafaro Field. Game one will
begin at noon. |
