Shaffer, Boone Stellar in Doubleheader Sweep of Duquesne
Niles, Ohio -- Youngstown State
starting pitchers Eric Shaffer and
Brian Boone combined to allow just
three runs and eight hits in 10 2/3
innings to lead the Penguins to a
doubleheader sweep of the Duquesne
Dukes 4-2 and 3-1 Thursday afternoon
at Eastwood Field.
With the sweep, the Penguins have won three straight contests
and improve to 9-17 on the season.
Duquesne falls to 11-13 on the
season.
In game one, Shaffer allowed two runs on five hits to pick up
his first win of the season while
Boone surrendered one run on three
hits in game two. Andy Svitak
threw 1 2/3 scoreless innings in the
first game to pick up his first
career save while Paul Yates earned
his fourth of the season by also
throwing 1 2/3 scoreless innings in
game two.
Senior Jim Lipinski tied the school record in career RBIs on
a two-run homer in the second inning
of game one to bring his four-year
total to 118. He currently
shares the top mark with assistant
coach Andrew Clough.
In game one, Youngstown State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead
after scoring three runs in the
second and one in the third.
Justin Banks drew a leadoff walk to start the second and
Lipinski followed with his two-run
homer to left to put the Penguins up
two. Jim Phillips was then hit
by a pitch and advanced to third
when Kyle Penrod ripped a single to
right center. Phillips scored
one batter later on a double play
groundout to put the Penguins up
three.
In the third, Banks doubled home Brian Boone to increase the
lead to 4-0.
Duquesne, however, struck with two runs in the second to cut
the margin to two. After Luke
Taggart and Dan Schwartzbaur
hit back-to-back one-out singles,
Mike Grecco drew a walk to knock
Shaffer out of the game.
Svitak then came in and walked Pete
Maropis and gave up an RBI single to
Steve Maiolo that got the Dukes
within two, but Banks' relay from
Kendall Schlabach on the hit gunned
Grecco at the plate for the second
out. Svitak then retired Andy
Gallina on a fly out to right to end
the inning.
In game two, YSU scored all of its runs in the bottom of the
third on two hits and a double
steal. Schlabach walked to
start the inning and Brandon Caipen
reached on a bunt single to put
runners on first and second with
nobody out. Charles Schultz
followed with an RBI single up the
middle to plate Schlabach and
Banks brought home Caipen on a
sacrifice fly two batters later for
the second run. Then, with two
outs and runners at the corners,
Adam Cox stole second and Schultz
scored on the throw to put the
Penguins up three.
Boone held Duquesne scoreless and retired 11 straight hitters
at one point before the Dukes scored
a run in the sixth.
Mike Korzeniewski was charged with the loss for the Dukes in
game one as he allowed all four runs
on eight hits in five innings of
work. Dave Knechtel allowed
all three runs on four hits in three
innings in game two to pick up the
loss.
The Penguins will play a three-game series at IP-Fort Wayne
beginning with a doubleheader
Saturday at 2 p.m. |
