Penguins Earn Split in Season Opener; Sunday's
Game Cancelled
Jefferson City,
Tenn. -- Youngstown State's Jim
Phillips hit a grand slam in the top
of the sixth to lift the Penguins to
a 4-2 victory in game one of a
doubleheader with the Dayton Flyers
on Saturday at the Southeastern
Baseball Complex.
The Penguins fell 8-5 in game two and will return home a day
early as the two teams agreed to
cancel tomorrow's scheduled game
because of forecasted inclement
weather.
Junior lefty Justin Thomas surrendered two runs on five hits
and struck out seven in five innings
to pick up the win in game one.
Freshman righty Ryan Sellman came on
to pitch a perfect seventh to pick
up the save.
In game two, Charles Schultz, Dustin Thomas and Brian Dill
each recorded two hits, but the
Flyers tagged Eric Shaffer with five
runs in two innings en route to
victory. Sophomore Kevin Libeg threw
the first three innings and allowed
one run on three hits.
Dayton took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first, but the
Penguins took the lead in the next
half inning with two runs of their
own. Phillips led off the inning
with a solo homer to left and Erich
Diedrich hit a sacrifice fly to left
to bring home Dustin Thomas.
The Flyers tied the score with a run in the fourth and took
an 8-2 advantage with six runs in
the sixth. YSU scored three unearned
runs in the top of the seventh for
the final tally.
The Penguins will travel to take on the Texas Longhorns in a
three-game series beginning Friday
at 3:30 p.m. EST. |
