Penguins Earn Split in Season Opener; Sunday's Game Cancelled
Jefferson City, Tenn. -- Youngstown State's Jim Phillips hit a grand slam in the top of the sixth to lift the Penguins to a 4-2 victory in game one of a doubleheader with the Dayton Flyers on Saturday at the Southeastern Baseball Complex.
The Penguins fell 8-5 in game two and will return home a day early as the two teams agreed to cancel tomorrow's scheduled game because of forecasted inclement weather.
Junior lefty Justin Thomas surrendered two runs on five hits and struck out seven in five innings to pick up the win in game one. Freshman righty Ryan Sellman came on to pitch a perfect seventh to pick up the save.
In game two, Charles Schultz, Dustin Thomas and Brian Dill each recorded two hits, but the Flyers tagged Eric Shaffer with five runs in two innings en route to victory. Sophomore Kevin Libeg threw the first three innings and allowed one run on three hits.
Dayton took a 1-0 lead with a run in the first, but the Penguins took the lead in the next half inning with two runs of their own. Phillips led off the inning with a solo homer to left and Erich Diedrich hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Dustin Thomas.
The Flyers tied the score with a run in the fourth and took an 8-2 advantage with six runs in the sixth. YSU scored three unearned runs in the top of the seventh for the final tally.
The Penguins will travel to take on the Texas Longhorns in a three-game series beginning Friday at 3:30 p.m. EST.
